About James
Comey earned a JD from University of Chicago Law School in 1985, then entered law focusing on criminal matters. Following law school, Comey clerked for former United States District Judge John M. Walker, Jr. in Manhattan. He then worked for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher as an associate. Comey joined the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, serving as Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division from 1987-1993.
From 1996-1991, Comey worked as Managing Assistant US Attorney for the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. He was deputy special counsel to the Senate Whitewater Committee and served as lead prosecutor in the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing case. Comey then worked as an adjunct law professor at the University of Richmond School of Law.
In 2002, he was appointed to the role of United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He was confirmed as Deputy Attorney General in 2003, and held that position through 2005. In office he handled one of the largest identity fraud cases in US history, indicted the founder of Adelphia Communications, forcing the company into bankruptcy. Comey led the prosecutions of Martha Stewart and Operation Wooden Nickel, a large-scale operation of foreign exchange trading scams. He also supported enhanced interrogation techniques for use by the CIA when interrogating suspects.
Comey transitioned to private practice in 2005, becoming General Counsel and Senior Vice President for Lockheed Martin. He stayed there until 2010, when he joined a senior management committee at Bridgewater Associates in CT.
