QUESTIONNAIRE
I was recently appointed to the plaintiff's steering committee for the social media addiction multidistrict litigation in the Northern District of California. I have been working with victims of online exploitation for over 18 years and understand the unique harms from this kind of addiction and abuse.
How did you build a successful practice? The Marsh Law Firm has been evolving over the past 18 years into one of the leading advocates in New York, Michigan, Washington, DC and the country for sexually abused individuals. Our practice understands the special consideration that trauma victims require. Only by being trauma informed and client focused can we best assist our clients on their healing journey.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?Clients should find an attorney who understands and appreciates their lived experiences.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?Child sex abuse and online exploitation law is complex and requires attorneys who understand the unique challenges of practicing in this area.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?A free phone consultation allows our attorneys to gather information about a potential case and carefully listen to the client\'s story, sometimes for the first time.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation? There is nothing specifically we require on a first call. What is most important is developing a rapport with the client and making them feel comfortable.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community? Our attorneys have dedicated their professional life to helping victims of sexual trauma. We understand the unique needs of victims and survivors and strive to address their whole person and not just the technical aspects of their potential legal issues.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?The most rewarding aspect of this job is seeing clients empowered to demand accountability. Moving from victim to survivor is really important for clients who have long felt that they were alone, afraid, and misunderstood.
What are your other interests in addition to law?Art and culture helps make all our lives easier to endure. Nature provides a vital respite from daily stress and work responsibilities.
Are you involved in your community?I enjoy coaching contributing to charitable and community organizations. I am president of Child USA and involved with the New York Society in the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC). I founded the nationally recognized Children's Law Center in Washington, DC.

Cases
Paroline v. United States, 134 S. Ct. 1710 (2014)
In January 2014, the Supreme Court considered the appeal of Doyle Randall Paroline, who was caught with two pictures of Amy among 280 illegal child pornography images and was found liable by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit for the full amount of the restitution. The 5th Circuit said it was up to Paroline—not Amy—to find the other men who could also be on the hook for restitution and go after them for contributions. The legal theory is called joint and several liability. It’s the way courts deal with pollution cases in which a bunch of defendants all dump toxic waste into a single lake. A plaintiff sues one wealthy company for all the damages, and then that defendant has to sue other companies to share the costs. Thirty-four states, dozens of victims’ rights and child advocacy groups, local prosecutors and members of Congress urged the court to uphold the ruling against Paroline by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
