Originally from Kentucky, James attended Murray State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 1998. During his time at Murray State, he was recognized for his leadership and academic achievements, being named to the Order of Omega honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society, and Lambda Alpha Honor Society. He was also an active member of the Sigma Pi fraternity and was honored as "Mr. Murray State" in 1996.
