Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Earlier this year I represented a college student in a Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon case. The factual circumstances were not the best, because my client and his co-defendant went to a drug dealer's house together, the co-defendant brandished a firearm and a robbery ensued. I was able to track down a witness who saw my client fleeing with a woman who was also at the house, indicating that he did not leave with the co-defendant, which helped support our story that they did not act in concert. Our side of things was that my client was shocked that his co-defendant pulled out a gun and rather than stay and take money and personal belongings, he took off running with a woman who was at the house the moment the gun came out, because he was just as surprised and scared as everyone else at the house. After providing this witness, as well as other corroborating information, we recently had his charges dismissed.

How did you build a successful practice?

My Practice is built on doing the right thing for people. It's built on personal relationship with clients, families and communities. I return every phone call I receive during business hours the same day it is received. I think it has helped my practice that I'm as concerned as my client and their family about their future as they are. My practice is successful because my clients know that I would do anything in my power to help them.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is vital when it comes to success in cases. The reality is that every court system in North Carolina operates differently. Certain positions have certain responsibilities in one county, whereas in another, it could be a totally different position's job. As a client, you want an attorney who knows who to talk to, to get the job done as efficiently as possible, especially in the Criminal Justice System. This will give you answers to your questions early in your case, versus weeks and months down the road, which means you can move on with your life sooner rather than later.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

With a Free Phone Consultation, I will let you know the step-by-step process as to what to expect with your charges as well as what to do next. We would discuss the factual circumstances surrounding your case and on the basis of your story, I would inform you of possible defenses, if any, to your charges.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

During a Phone Consultation, I need name and date of birth of person charged; the county charged in as well as the courthouse location of the case; what the charge is and who charged it. This information will help me with being able to follow up with the District Attorney's Office about the case.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

What separates me from other lawyers is my level of care. I think this is something far better to be answered by current and former clients, and I highly recommend speaking with someone I either currently represent or have represented in the past, because they will be able to give a first-hand assessment of how I operate as a lawyer, and more importantly, as a person. I've served as President of the Criminal Defense Bar and am committed to helping my clients and my community in any way that I can.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is when a client says 'Thank You.' I know it doesn't sound like much, but having a former-client come to the office just to say thanks, is a reward like you wouldn't believe. Helping a client to find a job, get back into school, renew a broken relationship, and overcome their circumstances and achieve success are all extremely rewarding. The greatest reward is probably just knowing that as a Lawyer, I affect people's lives in positive ways, and to me it's not solely a reward, it's my responsibility.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I'm a former athlete and avid sports fan. I grew up playing about every sport imaginable, and even spent a couple of years playing Semi-Pro Football after college. My college team is 'The North Carolina State Wolfpack, MLB is the Yankees, NBA is the Hornets (we're improving), and NFL is the Panthers.
