Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Recently settled a matter for $300,000 which started at $40,000 Recently helped structure a business for a new coffee company Structured a joint venture agreement for a real estate development venture.

How did you build a successful practice?

I believe in giving small businesses the attention, flexibility and dedicated sophisticated support they deserve. Critical to this approach is the personal and professional relationships I build with business owners. At the end of the day, the focus is always quality- quality of clients, quality of life, quality of business."

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Ethical and professional qualities are the most important. Ensuring that teh client's interests are constantly being considered is the hallmark of a good attorney.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

I have extensive knowledge of the construction and restaurant industry because I surround myself with specialists and consultants that also keep their finger on the pulse of the industry.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Consultations are as detailed as possible. During the course of any consultation I try to ascertain as many facts as possible. Consultations usually span several conversations and several meetings if necessary as it is critical that I can understand not only the strengths but the risks to the client's claims as well. After reviewing the facts in some detail I take the time to explain the strengths and weaknesses of a client's case and an estimate of potential legal fees and costs based on the intake process.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

For a litigation matter I generally need to see all contracts, invoices and relevant correspondence. For a transactional matter I usually require that the client, with my assistance, complete a detailed intake questionnaire designed to ascertain the goals, risks, liabilities, and financial planning considerations relevant to the client's business.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I believe in a very humanistic and holistic approach to either litigation or transactional matters. I have an unusual and very diverse professional background which has kept me grounded and practical in my approach. Long term relationships are the cornerstone of my business. Being an adviser or counsel for businesses means much more than acting as the lawyer on the occasional transaction or business dispute. Being a true adviser means taking the time to know the client, know their personal challenges and successes and keeping up to date with the changes in their personal and professional lives. It is a rewarding part of what I do but it also allows me to quickly and readily identify opportunities or resources for my client. So when I'm in the know, my clients have opportunities for growth and success that wouldn't otherwise be apparent.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Being a relationship advisor for my client whether it be a dispute or a proposed new business venture.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Martial arts is a big interest of mine as the philosophies have translated into effective negotiation or dispute resolution strategies.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes. I act a mentor to certain startup companies, I have represented individuals pro bono on complex litigation, and I am involved with various organizations where I lecture on issues relevant to small business owners, construction companies, and restaurants.
