Business organizations, business transactions, securities law and real estate transactions are Mr. Funk's specialties. He has experience in corporate law, mergers, and acquisitions, drafting disclosure documents for private securities offerings, and in purchases, sales and leasing of commercial and residential real estate.

In addition to advising business clients on a variety of legal matters, Mr. Funk also enjoys an active transactional practice, including:

  • Representing a leading animal health products distributor in strategic acquisitions aggregating more than $50 million
  • Advising a leading destination club from the start-up phase through real estate acquisitions aggregating more than $40 million and a $20 million revolving credit facility
  • Serving as special securities counsel to a developer of medical facilities in connection with private equity fundings of more than $15 million
  • Representing a manufacturer in a $15 million acquisition by a strategic buyer
  • Representing an insurance and bonding company in an $11 million merger with a NYSE-listed insurance holding company
  • Representing a software company in a $6 million acquisition by a Fortune 500 information technology company
  • Numerous other business financings, purchases or sales
  • Numerous other commercial real estate purchases, sales or leases


    BACKGROUND
    A Colorado native, Joel holds a B.A. in political science, with distinction, from Colorado State University and a law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Before joining the firm in 1994, Joel practiced corporate and securities law in Denver, advising private and publicly held entities with regard to mergers, acquisitions, and compliance with state and federal securities laws. He is co-author of "Covenants Not to Compete in the Sale of a Business: Protecting Goodwill," which appeared in the December 1997 edition of The Colorado Lawyer.

    Joel is a member of the Business Law Sections of the American and Colorado Bar Associations, and the Larimer County Bar Association.

    Joel is an avid motorcyclist and enjoys travel, golf, outdoor recreation and music.

    COMMUNITY SERVICE
    Joel's community activities include service on the boards of directors of Discovery Science Center (2006 to present) and Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Northern Colorado and Southeast Wyoming (1998 through 2003, President in 2000), volunteering with local legal aid organizations and the Fort Collins Area United Way and coaching in youth basketball programs.
