About John

North Carolina’s workers’ compensation program is based on the belief that employees should be able to receive full medical treatment for their injuries. As a result, nearly all employers are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance. If you have received a workplace injury, you may be entitled to coverage for your medical bills. If you or a family member has suffered a serious workplace injury, the Raleigh workers’ compensation lawyers of Scudder & Hedrick, PLLC can help.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

A case where I made a significant difference in the last year involved an older gentleman who was rendered paraplegic in 1973. His workers' compensation benefits were terminated in 1976. He retained me to represent him. I successfully obtained an award of weekly benefits retroactive to 1976 and an award for future benefits for the remainder of my client's life. I have now obtained an Order requiring the insurance carrier to hire a life care planner to prepare a plan for my client's medical needs, including modifications to his home, vehicle, and wheelchair, for the remainder of his life.

How did you build a successful practice?

The success of my practice is built on expertise in the field of workers' compensation law. I am certified as a specialist in workers' compensatin law by the North Carolina State Bar. Responsiveness is probably my foremost goal. I work dilligently to respond to all inquiries from my clients the same day. I try to be available by telephone or email everyday. I work very hard to prevent any delays in moving my clients' claims forward. Professionalism is important to me in dealings with the Court, clients and opposing counsel. I have a proven track record of success at every appellate level. I firmly believe that my clients are happy with the results I have achieved for them. I receive many referrals for fomer clients. Former clients are the best source of business.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

People searching for a lawyer should look for honesty, integirty, knowledge and experince in the field and responsiveness. Promtly returned calls and clear communication are extremely important.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I regularly provide free telephone consultations lasting 30 minutes or longer. During a 30 minute consultation, I can usually obtain most of the information I need to assess a claim and answer most general questions a caller may have. I can explain what the caller should expect in the near or distant future. I can usually assess whether the caller is being treated fairly or unfairly. I can explain to the caller what rights he or she has under the law. I can also assess whether the caller really nedds a lawyer or not.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is eliminating the problems for which my clients' decided to hire a lawyer. In my job, I am a problem solver. I use experience, knowledge and stratgey to profesionally, ethically and quickly solve my clients' problems. If my client has been denied disability compensation or medical treatment, I will use everything I know to solve those problems and have my client compensated and provided with medical treatment.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Outside of work, my interests are my wife and daughters, hunting, fishing and college basketball.
