John Edward Charland was born in Waterville, Maine.  At an early age, he moved to Boston where he excelled in school and was the recipient of academic scholarships.  He also was active in sports and chess, becoming the Massachusetts High School State Chess Champion as a junior.  He dedicated many hours actively participating in community organizations, such as City-Wide Educational Coalition. These early years ingrained in him by first hand experience the need and importance of helping those who were unable to fight powerful special interests groups and companies on their own. He was rewarded for these efforts with invitations for radio and television appearances as a high schooler.

John received his Baccalaureate in Arts from Blackburn College in Carlinville Illinois in 1979 where he was President of the Student Senate and the recipient of academic, work, and student government awards.  He remained active in voicing protection of common persons relating to the issues confronting the state and the country, particularly for those in rural communities.

In 1982, John obtained his Master's Degree in Public Administration from the School of Management at Suffolk University in Boston and worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Boston University.  In 1988, he received his Juris Doctor degree from The University of Iowa College of Law, where he was managing editor of The Journal of Corporation Law,  after having served as an associate editor of the Iowa Law Review and he authored Willfulness, Good Faith, and the Quagmire of Liquidated Damages in the Age Discrimination Under Employment Act,   13 J. Corp. L. 573 (1988).  The concepts and legal tests proposed in the article coincidentally happened to be adopted by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in an opinion that was issued while John's article was being published.  Other circuits joined the 10th Circuit, until the Supreme Court subsequently clarified the issue.

Following law school, John clerked for the Honorable J. Smith Henley of the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.  In 1989, he associated with a large Phoenix firm, O'Connor Cavanagh.  Since 1992, John has owned and operated his own law firm representing consumers.  Beginning his own law firm has allowed John to realize fully his passion for helping people at all levels of society and especially those in need of protection.  He has had several cases written up in the Wall Street Journal, the Arizona Republic, and covered by several local news channels and the nationally syndicated Inside Edition.

John maintains an active litigation practice in Arizona, California, and Maine.  He is a member of the bars of Arizona, California, the District of Columbia (inactive) and Maine.  He also has litigated cases in New York, Delaware, Oklahoma, and other jurisdictions.  He has gained a reputation for perseverance and results.

John is dedicated to protecting the client and leveling the playing field for common people.

SAMPLE LEGAL CASES

Does Getting a Document Notarized Make It "Legal"?
The public's perception of what a notary does and what notarization accomplishes is often incorrect. This is particularly the case when a person brings a document to a notary public to be notarized, thinking that the notarization will in some way "legalize" the document or make it "official." Unmarried? You Are Not Alone, But You Still Need a Plan
Did you know that in many instances, it is even more important that a single person have a well-coordinated estate plan, than a married couple. This is because the default laws governing estates often work poorly for people without a spouse and may not adequately provide for a significant other or unmarried partner. Having a cohesive and well-drafted estate plan will ensure that you protect and provide for those you truly care about upon your death. Learn more here.
When an Adult Needs a Guardian of Property
There are two types of guardianships: a guardianship of the person and a guardianship of the property (also known as a guardianship of the estate or a conservatorship). A guardian of the person is responsible for the ward’s physical safety and well-being. A guardian of the property is responsible for the ward’s money and assets. Learn more here.
