About John

John R. Nelson is committed to helping his clients obtain the results they deserve so they can move forward with their lives. John is a seasoned businessman and entrepreneur and uses this knowledge to find unique solutions and think outside the box. His love of learning compelled him to return to law school while working full time.

As a longtime competitive athlete, including being a member of the Gator track team and an avid long-distance bicyclist, he understands that success requires planning, building, and execution. The same applies to his legal philosophy and as a client advocate. He is an expert software developer and has used those skills to start and sell three applications, having one application used by hundreds of multi-million dollar businesses. As a Professional Engineer he wrote one of the first CAAA1990 Title V Air Permits approved by the state of South Carolina in addition to using his engineering expertise to improve chemical process operations and have multi-million dollar impacts on profitability.

Outside the law, John enjoys spending time with his two daughters and three sons, working out, road cycling, flying airplanes, and challenging himself with new experiences. John has been member of the Volusia County ECHO Board and is an active leader in his sons’ cub scout pack.

Questions & Answers

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should seek a lawyer that will treat their case as if it was the lawyer's own case. Too often cases are viewed as "inventory" to pay bills instead of remembering the client came to the lawyer because of legal needs.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Answering the following questions is critical in a phone consultation: (a) information regarding dates/times of the issue at hand, (b) why this particular issue is important to the client, (c) is there any evidence to support the issue (i.e. doctor's visits, 3rd party witnesses, contracts).

What are your other interests in addition to law?

In addition to law, I have built businesses in aviation software. I have a passion for the general and commercial aviation community. Personally, I am a commercial and instrument rated pilot currently working on my flight instructor rating.

Are you involved in your community?

I am a 18 year member of the Kiwanis and have been on several County boards. Currently, I am focused on my younger son's cub scout pack.
