Mr. Traeger is head of the Firm's Environmental Practice Area, Chair of the Firm's New "Green Business Practice," and serves as internal General Counsel for the Firm.  He specializes in the areas of environmental, administrative and corporate law with extensive experience in dealing with federal, state and local environmental regulatory authorities.  Mr. Traeger is a director of an exploratory St. Louis task force (Sustainable St. Louis) that is working with key stakeholders on regional sustainability for the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.

He specializes in the area of environmental law, with an emphasis on the analysis of environmental risk associated with transactions involving the transfer of real property, business compliance with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations and negotiations with environmental regulatory authorities.

Mr. Traeger has considerable experience in the corporate sector where he served as environmental and corporate counsel for Ralston Purina Company, Sigma Chemical Company and Continental Baking Company.  Mr. Traeger's experience in the environmental field includes the following:

  • Mergers & Acquisitions - environmental due diligence and assessment of environmental risks and opportunities

  • Environmental Site Assessments - environmental issues relating to the sale and purchase of real property including overview and coordination of environmental site assessments

  • Superfund Litigation - matters involving the "release" and disposal of hazardous substances under CERCLA

  • Clean Air Act - matters involving compliance with the Clean Air Act and state and local air pollution regulations governing sources of air pollutants

  • RCRA - matters involving the treatment, storage, generation, transportation and disposal of hazardous waste including permitting and disposal documentation

  • Underground Storage tanks (UST's) - matters involving compliance with the federal and state UST regulations including removal and closure activities, and claims against the Missouri Petroleum Storage Tank Insurance Fund and other state UST funds

  • Clean Water Act - matters involving NPDES permits, industrial discharge to POTWs, storm water permits, and wetlands issues

  • Environmental Impairment Liability Insurance and the applicability of comprehensive general liability coverage to environmental liability
