Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I think I made a difference in a business litigation matter where I was representing the Defendants. I/we believe the Plaintiff corporation and/or their counsel grossly overvalued the Plaintiff's claim. I think we were ultimately able to convince Plaintiff and/or Plaintiff's counsel that they were looking at this case from a completely improper perspective. The case was then eventually dismissed by Plaintiff.

How did you build a successful practice?

I think we do good, quality legal work at reasonable cost to our clients. They get good value from us. We are honest and forthcoming in our approach to our clients. We don't over sell cases. We try to keep people grounded. We don't work on matters that we don't know anything about and/or are otherwise not equipped to handle. We are not afraid to reject cases. We don't take in everything that comes knocking on our door. We work hard for our clients.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

First of all, someone how is honest with them. I hate to say that. Next someone who knows the substantive area of the law the case involves. If it is a litigation matter, or one that could develop into litigation, then someone who is not afraid to file a lawsuit and to eventually try the case if necessary. Someone who is also not afraid to and who is willing to work hard on your case.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

I think that knowing the local rules, customs, judges, magistrates, etc., is important. When the judges know who you are, they know what to expect from you and you know what to expect from them. I think that helps in working a case, preparing a case for trial, negotiating a resolution, or, ultimately, trying the case if necessary.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I probably provide too much. I can and do provide quiet a lot of information. But most of the time, if it is a case that justifies us getting involved in, there is no way that a phone consultation is enough, or that a client will learn enough to go ahead and take his matter on his own and resolve it without our involvement or the involvement of another lawyer. Sometimes, honestly, I tell the client, "You have a good case, but the economics of the case don't justify you hiring us. So, here is what I think you ought to do . . ." And then a give them a road map on how to resolve their matter without the need of a lawyer.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Depends on the nature of the matter they are calling about. Minimum: name, address, email address, adverse party name, what happened, when, damages, what result are they looking for, have they spoken with another lawyer, what did he or she say, why do they think they have a claim?

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

There are a lot of good lawyers in our community. I am not going to be so bold as to say that I am the best or our firm is the best, but in answer to the question, I think what I said in response to question number 2 above: I think we do good, quality legal work at reasonable cost to our clients.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Doing a good job for someone. Getting a good result for them. And having them be appreciative of that.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Anything my kids are interested in. High school and college football and wrestling. Trying to stay in shape. Cleveland professional sports teams.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes. Active in the Bar Association. Past President there. Have been on several boards. Currently on the St. Vincent-St. Mary High School Board of Trustees and also on the Summit City Shamrock Club Board of Trustees. It's a youth wrestling club. I am also a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at St. Vincent-St. Mary, and I am an Ohio High School Athletic Association Class 1 certified wrestling official.
