Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

A woman lost her job due to alleged misconduct. She was denied unemployment insurance benefits and became homeless. I investigated the matter and discovered that the allegations of misconduct were false and was able to obtain a hearing despite the fact that the time to appeal expired. She received her benefits and back benefits and was able to rent an apartment. She was no longer homeless.

How did you build a successful practice?

By treating each case as if it was the only case I was handling.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Honesty is the best approach. I think clients may want to hear what they want to hear, but fell that they need to hear what they should hear.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is very important but still: the facts and the law are what will guide your case.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Under my stage name Jon Avner, I am also a professional actor and writer.

Are you involved in your community?

Vice President of Levittown Chamber of Commerce. I also perform pro bono work for the Volunteer Lawyers Project - Nassau/Suffolk Law Services, Inc., The Safe Center (formerly the Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence) and the Nassau County Bar Association, where he is also a member of the Lawyers Assistance Program Committee and the recipient of the 2015 Thomas Maligno Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award.
