Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
One of the cases of which I am most proud occurring over recent years, was my representation of a widow and her three small children after her husband died in a tragic and unexpected automobile crash. After a lot of wrangling and fighting with the insurance companies for the other side, my associate attorney and I were able to recover over $2 million for the family. It makes me feel good to know that they will be secure financially, in spite of the terrible loss of a husband and a father.
How did you build a successful practice?
I have built a successful practice by intentionally keeping a smaller caseload and trying to give my clients individualized and compassionate service.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Whether it is myself or another firm/lawyer, clients should look for lawyers that are not afraid to tell them like it is. Good or bad. They should ask lawyers how many active cases they have open. If a lawyer is handling more than 75 active cases or so, clients should question the lawyer as to how he or she is able to effectively handle so many cases at one time. A client should always ask potential lawyers specifically about their experience with the kind of case a given client is dealing with. Clients should ask lawyers whether they are comfortable taking cases to jury trial if no settlement can be reached.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
In our free phone consultations, myself or one of my assistants will take down detailed information about your potential case. Even if we do not take your case, we can usually provide some generalized, practical advice to help point you in the right direction or, at a minimum, we can provide a quality referral to a colleague who specializes in the type of issues with which a potential client may be dealing.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I am different from other personal injury lawyers in the community because of my extensive background in personal injury defense. I have worked on both sides of the bar. The insurance companies and their adjusters used to be my clients. I know how they think. I also graduated with honors from law school and spent a year working for a judge, the Hon. José Marquez, in the Colorado Court of Appeals, gaining invaluable experience, before I started private practice.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is making clients happy and giving clients money at the end of their cases. I do not like to see insurance companies take advantage of folks, especially when they have been injured and their lives have been turned upside down. It makes me happy to help folks avoid the numerous pitfalls that arise when dealing with insurance companies. I hate to see people fall victim to the tricks the insurance adjusters play and their low-ball offers.
