Kari P. Footland was born in Arlington, Virginia. She received a Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis on Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1999. She received a Juris Doctor degree from The College of William and Mary in 2002, where she was a staff member of the William and Mary Law Review. Ms. Footland is admitted to practice law in Virginia and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

During law school, Ms. Footland was a summer intern examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office where she examined patent applications in the field of electrical switches. Additionally, Ms. Footland was a summer associate at an intellectual property law firm in Silicon Valley, drafting and prosecuting applications in the computer hardware and software arts, as well as in Internet-related technologies. Prior to joining Staas & Halsey, Ms. Footland worked as a patent attorney at an Arlington, Virginia law firm specializing in the preparation and prosecution of electrical and electromechanical applications.
