Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I was retained on a payment plan by an African-American father of a toddler in Ft. Myers, Florida to defend against the mother's creative attempt to gain sole custody in a long-term effort to relocate the child out-of-state. The father did not have much advance notice of the hearing on the Mother's Supplemental Petition to Modify the Parenting Plan. We prevailed in style, demonstrating how inconsistent Mother's testimony was with the true family history.

How did you build a successful practice?

Successful' is a subjective term. I've succeeded in becoming an attorney that has accomplished the goals of nearly all my clients (whether to prevail or to discover facts), but my practice is struggling to grow with word-of-mouth as my primary source of client referrals.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should be inclined to hire an attorney they know demonstrates competency and maintains rapport with clients, colleagues and judges. Clients should be looking for expertise and efficiency before rapport. In my experience, it is the strong recommendation of a trusted confidant that drives the decision to retain counsel.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is very helpful in managing the logistics of setting hearings and accomplishing litigation, but otherwise, in today's age of technology, most everything substantively required for motion practice can be accomplished remotely.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

A free phone consultation gives us the opportunity to initially define the area of practice and explore the fact pattern before determining whether it is essential or helpful to meet.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Party names on both sides of dispute, basic BASIC BASIC facts (typically chronologically), and the scheduled availability for a face-to-face meeting.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I am very well-rounded in my experience as an employee of the court system, having worked as a staff attorney and neutral mediator for a significant amount of time at a relatively young age, so I am generally able to see both sides of a dispute and guage the expectations of a client very early on in a case. Where client satisfaction is key, it helps to manage the client's expectations. I do this in a very straightforward style. I am technologically available and often able to establish rapport with my clients.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Accomplishing the client's wishes by outperforming expectations.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

My children, Travel, Snow Skiing, & Scuba Diving.

Are you involved in your community?

I sit on the board of two charities, Charity for Change, one that teaches children about philanthropy and the other, Children's Home Society of Florida, the oldest children's charity in Florida which aids children in difficult situations. I have previously participated in Rotary and Florida Justice Teaching, teaching children about the U.S. Constitution, notions of justice and the U.S. legal system.
