Pirtle-Washer is the law school’s “oldest and most prestigious moot court competition,” and his achievement here speaks to his skill as a well-prepared and impassioned trial lawyer. After graduation, Mr. Tibbs became a member of the Adult Trial Division of the Louisville Metro Public Defender’s Office, successfully defending clients charged with complex felonies. Mr. Tibbs has tried over 40 cases in the District and Circuit courts of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He has received seven Walker Awards for excellence in advocacy (awarded only when a client is acquitted of all charges in a felony trial in circuit courts). In October of 2008, Attorney Tibbs was promoted to Deputy Chief of the Adult Trial Division, becoming Chief of that division in July 2010. He was selected out of a national pool to attend the National Criminal Defense College Trial Practice Institute at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, graduating in 2007. In 2008, Mr. Tibbs received the prestigious Frank E. Haddad, Jr. Young Lawyer of the Year Award, given to the top lawyer under 35 in Louisville. He is a member of several civic and professional legal organizations including the Louisville Black Lawyers Association, NAACP, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Mr. Tibbs is also a member of the Louis D. Brandeis American Inn of Court. In his spare time, he is the Assistant Mock Trial Coach for duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky.

Working to protect Kentucky’s most vulnerable citizens and natural landscapes has long been Joe’s personal and professional passion. As an undergraduate student at the University of Kentucky, Joe successfully lobbied for Appalachian studies curricula and the formation of the UK Appalachian Center. As a law student, Joe spent his summers working throughout east Kentucky and central Appalachia with the Appalachian Land Ownership Task Force documenting absentee land and mineral ownership by out of state energy giants. From 2007 to 2011, Joe was a partner in Getty & Childers, a Lexington civil litigation firm. In 2012, Joe started Joe F. Childers & Associates, the predecessor to Childers & Baxter, PLLC. Joe has served on the boards of the Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center, Kentucky State University, Kentucky Employers Mutual Insurance Company, the State Board of Claims, and as Commissioner on the State Mine Safety Review Commission and the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. Since 2015, Joe has served as Board Chair of the Kentucky Resources Council. Joe and his wife Denise have two adult children.

Jeffrey T. Sampson was born in Louisville, Kentucky on March 23, 1967. He received his B.B.A. with honors in management from the University of Kentucky, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He graduated in 1989 and then obtained his J.D. degree from the University of Louisville School of Law in 1992. Mr. Sampson is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association, the Louisville Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Justice Association, and the Kentucky Justice Association. Following his graduation from high school in 2007, Kevin attended Georgetown College, where he studied History and Political Science. After his graduation from Georgetown College in 2011, Kevin attended the Salmon P. Chase College of Law in Northern Kentucky. While in law school, Kevin clerked for a large regional defense firm in eastern Kentucky, where he gained valuable experience concerning the judicial system.
