Asleep At The Wheel 13 Mistakes The Insurance Company Desperately Hopes You Will Make After Your Florida Car Accident

2010

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

We were recently retained by a gentleman who had been involved in a bad car accident. He was riding as a passenger in car when the driver of his car accidently drove the wrong way down a highway. After the injured man was discharged from the hospital, he had called one of the big firms that frequently run television ads. He spoke for a few minutes with a paralegal and the paralegal told him he didn't have a case because the injured man didn't know the last name of the gentlemen he was riding with. The injured gentleman was petrified because he knew he had a huge unpaid hospital bill that was coming. After the injured gentleman hired us, we rolled up our sleeves and did some investigation legwork. We were able to determine the identify of the driver, and found out that he carried $100,000 in bodily injury liability insurance. We made contact with the at-fault driver's insurance company and they agreed to tender the $100,000 for our client. Without our help, I am 100% confident that our client would never had received compensation.

How did you build a successful practice?

I think the key is practicing the Golden Rule: Treat others the way that you would want to be treated. We are a small firm - and like it that way. We are selective about the cases and clients we take on. When we agree to work with a client, we want that client to feel like they are part of our family. As has been the case since the beginning of our firm, the vast majority of our cases come by way of referral from current and past clients. Keeping our case load manageable allows us to focus on maximizing the value of each client's case. The means investing time, effort, and brainpower into each case. I think insurance companies and their lawyers recognize this about us, and I think that is why get achieve results that many other firms don't.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should look for a lawyer that has experience and a track record of success. But clients should also look for an attorney who they feel comfortable with, who they can actually speak to, and who will listen to their concerns. The ability to communicate freely between attorney and client is an important factor that many people overlook.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is an important - but not critical factor - to success in a personal injury case. Technology has made it possible for us to vastly expand the reach of our practice. We now handle cases all over Florida, and represent clients from all around the globe. That said, it is still important to have good relationships with the judges, opposing attorneys, and insurance company representatives. Having practiced in Central Florida for almost 30 years, I feel like I have very valuable professional relationships that help me help my clients.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

We provide a comprehensive strategy session with every potential new client we speak with. Sometimes we determine that a person really doesn't need to hire an attorney. If the case looks like one that will require an attorney, we explain everything that we - and cannot - do to help our client, how much it will cost, how long it will last, potential downsides, etc. We answer every question until our potential client knows and understands everything that he or she needs to make a good decision.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

We need to know the basic facts of the accident, what kind of medical treatment the potential client has received, and the identity of any witnesses.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

We are an intentionally small firm that focuses on personal attention. Our small size gives us the opportunity to work up each case individually and to really get to know our clients and impacts that their injuries have had on their lives.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

It might sound corny - but we really love to help people. Both Bob and I were raised under modest circumstances, and we know what it is like to feel like the "deck is stacked" against you. Nothing pleases us more than to make a huge insurance company do something that they didn't want to do (but should have done in the first place), and to help a family in need.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I have four (4) children in college at the moment, so my wife and I are largely focused on getting them through that experience. I am a lifelong athlete and enjoy physical fitness and working out. I also enjoy music, reading, and learning new things.
