Kyle Smalling is an attorney and co-owner of Capital City Law. A native of Boone, North Carolina, Kyle spent his early years in the High Country before moving to Raleigh with his high school sweetheart and now wife, Laura. In Raleigh, Kyle graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He then worked as a manager for several years at a small engineering start-up, designing and manufacturing detectors for explosives and poisons. This work led Kyle into the fields of corporate compliance and intellectual property, and eventually led him back to school to obtain a law degree.

Kyle studied law at Campbell University’s Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, where he focused on trial advocacy and intellectual property. He participated on the school’s traveling moot court team (appellate advocacy), where he was able to first work with his law partner, Katie Dowell, and ultimately place second in oral advocacy at The National Energy and Sustainability Moot Court Competition. Before graduating, he was also able to eek out a win against his other law partner, Amanda Buyrn, in their capstone trial advocacy course.

Although graduating from Campbell was exceptional, this was far surpassed by the birth of Kyle’s daughter, Annabelle, who has been described as one of the cutest baby girls to walk the face of the planet. When he is not working, Kyle enjoys taking hikes and visiting local museums and parks with his family, computer programming, and carpentry.

In addition to providing legal support to North Carolina businesses, Kyle is a member of the Eastern District of North Carolina’s Criminal Justice Act Training Panel and provides trial and litigation defense services to individuals charged with federal crimes. His work as a defense attorney also extends to Wake County, where he represents individuals on a variety of traffic infraction and criminal defense matters.

Kyle focuses on legal compliance and intellectual property protection for small and mid-sized businesses. This includes business formation, structuring, state and federal regulatory compliance, and intellectual property licensing.
