Tina Carr v. North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Systems
Plaintiff: Attorney for the plaintiff, Tina M. Carr. Carr filed action against North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System Inc., alleging unlawful discrimination. Carr, a transsexual and member of the Unitarian Church, claims that she was not hired on the basis of sex and religion. She was selected from a pool of students for an externship. No in person interview was conducted and the selection was based on the recommendation of her instructors as well as her resume. As soon as she began working she felt animosity towards her, and was demeaned in the presence of others by her supervisor. Based on the evidence presented, including the fact the Carr was never an employee nor did she have a standing application for employment, she is not protected by title VII. The claims were dismissed with prejudice.

Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I have built my practice on the following motto: building bridges to new chapters. My goal is always to assist clients in asserting their respective positions and achieving their objectives. In the area of family, divorce and employment discrimination law I have routinely been successful in changing lives for the better and helping my clients move forward. A very recent example involved a mother who learned that he ex-husband had possessed incestuous tendencies, which we believed was fueled by drug and alcohol abuse. The parties had one child: a six-year old girl. When the client came to me, her then attorney was not successful in achieving any oversight over the father. After filing an emergency motion, I was able to have the father/ex-husband drug tested within three days, which indicated illicit drug use. As a result, the Court ordered bi-weekly drug testing to the father. My client felt so much at ease knowing that our motion culminated in oversight over the ex-husband, and safety for their daughter.
How did you build a successful practice?
My practice has primarily grown organically- meaning through clients' referrals. My clients repeatedly tell me that I make them feel important. I take pride in communicating with clients and making their voices heard. I am successful in resolving issues by working with clients to consider their options and moving aggressive toward the chosen objective.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should always research their attorney. Attorney selection, especially in family matters is crucial as it is incredibly tumultuous time. As such, you require an attorney who is not only knowledgeable about the law, but equipped to cater to your situation and feelings. At times, that means an attorney is willing to tell you what you must hear, not what you want to hear. Always be aware of attorneys who make unfettered promises: we are lawyers, not clairvoyants.
