Clients should also pay attention to how responsive the attorney is, as well as their level of professionalism and attention that they give to the client – even before they sign a retainer agreement. If your lawyer is hard to get ahold of before you even retain him/her, it will probably be the same after. Having a clear understanding and familiarity with the local rules, judges, parties, etc. is extremely helpful in some cases – but not in every situation.
