How did you build a successful practice?
I have owned my own law firm since 1994. Since starting my law firm, I have built it up from myself and a single PC computer to where I now employ five (5) other lawyers and six (6) support staff. Prior to that, I worked for another law firm for nearly 12 years where I learned the ropes of the personal injury litigation field. My experience has taught me that hard work, being honest with your clients and others that you deal with combined with continuing to be persistent even when things do not look good for a client's case almost always pays off for both my clients and the building of a successful law practice. The bottom line is that there are no shortcuts. This philosophy has caused many clients to come back to my law firm with other legal problems that they need help with.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for a law firm that has the necessary resources to handle their case. In my 34 years of experience, I have seen many of cases lost by lawyers who simply did not have the resources or skill set that are necessary to adequately represent a client.Clients should also look for a lawyer who is both aggressively looking to win their case and who will follow all of the rules. I have seen many cases lost by other lawyers because they did something that was not within the rules that caused both the court and opposing counsel to treat the case a little bit differently because they felt that they could not trust the word of the offending lawyer. My law firm has been rated by Martindale-Hubbell with its AV Distinguished Rating. This reflects their highest rating based upon a review by both other lawyers and judges in the State as to both ethical standards and legal ability. I have also been rated as a Super Lawyer since 2009, which is another peer review rated process achieved by only the top 5% of the lawyers in the State of Illinois. I have also been elected to The American Society of Legal Advocates which is limited to the top 1% of all lawyers in the State of Illinois.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Given my nearly 34 years in practice, I can generally listen to a client's issue over the telephone and determine whether I believe that they have a valid case. Therefore, I will let a potential client know what I think about their potential case and whether it would be economically feasible to pursue for that client during the free phone consultation. If I believe that they have a potential case that would be worth pursuing then I will schedule that potential client into my office for further details to see if that client's issue is something that my law firm can help them with.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Generally, I like to conduct most of the client interview over the telephone. I find that this is appreciated by the prospective client so that we know what we are dealing with up front and they can bring all of the necessary documents needed to bring a case into the office with them. This is more efficient for the client so that we get most of the information needed up front.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
The biggest thing that distinguishes my law firm from other law firms is the personalized attention that a client receives. It is my goal to return all phone calls within 24 hours of a client calling us.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I enjoy traveling and photography.
Are you involved in your community?
I am on the Board of Directors of the Condominium Association where I live. I am also on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Bar Foundation which is the charitable arm of the Illinois State Bar Association which raises funds to give to legal aid organizations that help serve people in underserved communities throughout the State and which also assists other lawyers in need who fall upon hard times due to an illness or disease. I am also an elected Member of the Board of Governors of the Illinois State Bar Association.
