About Martha

Martha Engel graduated from William Mitchell College of Law in 2008.  During law school, she was a member of the William Mitchell Law Review and received CALI awards (highest grade in the class) for Trademark Litigation and Copyrights.  She served as Secretary for the Student Intellectual Property Law Association and competed in the Giles Sutherland Rich Moot Court.  She also participated in preparing amicus briefs in the cases of In re Bilski, 545 F.3d 943, 88 U.S.P.Q.2d 1385 (Fed. Cir. 2008) (en banc) and Tafas v. Dudas, 511 F. Supp. 2d 652, 86 U.S.P.Q.2d 1548 (E.D. Va 2007).  She served as an editor on Kenneth L. Port's Trademark and Unfair Competition Law and Policy in Japan and conducted research used in his article entitled "Trademark Extortion: The End of Trademark Law."

Prior to joining the firm, Martha was an associate attorney at Kinney & Lange in Minneapolis, MN.  She has experience drafting patent applications and prosecuting applications before the U.S. Patent Office for a variety of technologies, including materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, aircraft components, escalators, elevators, and electrical motors.  She has performed patent clearance searches, drafted invalidity opinions, and assisted with patent litigation.  She also has had significant exposure to trademark prosecution, both in the U.S. and internationally.  While at Kinney, she also co-authored chapters of Intellectual Property Law for Business Lawyers.

Martha has a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI.  Before attending law school, Martha was an applications engineer at The FALK Corporation (now Rexnord) in Milwaukee, WI, where she designed and tested custom gear reducers for a variety of industrial applications.  She has also worked in the corporate quality department at Harley-Davidson Motor Company, where she created and managed various quality training programs used throughout the company, including assisting in managing launch of company's Six Sigma training program. 

In her free time, Martha enjoys golfing, watching professional sports, attending car and motorcycle events, spending time outdoors, and learning new things.  A native of Saint Paul, Martha currently serves as a member of the Convent of the Visitation School Alumnae Association Board.

Martha is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Minnesota Intellectual Property Law Association.
