About Matthew
Matt Osenga is a registered patent attorney with extensive experience in intellectual property matters, including patent litigation and prosecution, as well as invalidity and non-infringement opinions. He has represented large and small clients in a number of different technology areas, including materials science, such as polymers, coatings, and other chemical compositions, pharmaceuticals, food products, synthetic wicker, and various mechanical devices, such as aerodynamic devices for vehicles, archery equipment, golf clubs, automatic dumpster locks, radiators, heat transfer tube configuration, charged air coolers, and others.
Matt's patent prosecution practice encompasses all aspects of patent practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, reexaminations, reissue application, examiner interviews, preparing briefs and arguments for appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, and interference proceedings. Matt's litigation experience includes the preparation of briefs, pleadings, motions, and expert reports, as well as assisting in discovery and witness preparation for trial. He has also prepared briefs and motions for appeals before the Federal Circuit.
Matt also has experience in other aspects of intellectual property law, including licensing of patents and computer technology, and providing advice regarding trademark and copyright protection. Matt's experience also includes trademark monitoring and enforcement.
Matt has been in private practice since 2000, working most recently in the Richmond Office of Williams Mullen. Before that, he worked for six years in the Washington, D.C. and Chicago offices of a large international law firm, Winston & Strawn LLP, and at a prominent IP boutique in Washington, D.C.
Matt services as Vice President and Treasurer of the Board of the Greater Richmond Intellectual Property Law Association (GRIPLA). He also serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Virginia State Bar Intellectual Property Section.
Matt is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Illinois and Virginia. He is a registered patent attorney with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
Matt received a B.S.E. in chemical engineering in 1997 from the University of Michigan and his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Illinois in 2000. While in law school, Matt served as recent developments editor of The University of Illinois Journal of Law, Technology and Policy, and on the Moot Court Executive Board.
