Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
A contentious case where the court sided with my client allowing the client to relocate with the child to another area of the state because the move was in the best interest of the child. The client was in tears when she thanked me for that result.
How did you build a successful practice?
Mostly by just being myself. Not being afraid to ask for help when needed regardless of the topic. One must be forthright when consulting with potential clients, listening to understand their questions and concerns before delivering honest, no-nonsense, straightforward answers, even when you are telling them something about the case they might not want to hear. Many times working after normal business hours and occasional weekends to accommodate client schedules. Timely returning phone calls and answering emails are important for the lawyer/client relationship. And, getting results through negotiation that the client participates in or trials when necessary.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
I think what to expect from their lawyer is more telling than what to look for. Honesty and integrity are right at the top. First of all, you have to like your lawyer. Don't be afraid to ask questions or for more detailed explanations that are understandable. This is how clients determine if they can work with the lawyer, whether they like the lawyer and whether to hire that lawyer.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Very important. The lawyer who knows not only opposing counsel, the magistrate, and the judge assigned to the case, has a reasonable idea about how each will function during the case. A lawyer, involved in a case, from outside of the judicial district does not enjoy this advantage.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Basic information about the process required to reach the desired result. A lawyer rarely, if ever, can guarantee results. Depending on the type of case, an estimate of what the client can expect regarding the legal fees and costs.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
The type of case, the name of the opposing party, the case number, and the court the case is assigned to if avali]labe. A description telling the lawyer what the case is about and what the client's legal needs are. The more information about the case, the more productive the consultation.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I am willing to do some work on cases after normal business hours and on weekends.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Reaching a result through negotiations including the client, through mediation, mediation/arbitration, or trial that the client is pleased with.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Mostly anything outside whether it be walking/hiking, mountain biking, skiing, camping, or other activities. I enjoy concerts and the theater. Also my personal physical fitness.
Are you involved in your community?
I have been a volunteer mentor attorney for the local Teen Court for over 10 years. I have also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and local bar association arranged topic-specific ask a lawyer events.
