About M. Scott
In 2006, Scott returned to his home state of New Mexico and was admitted to practice law before all courts of the State of New Mexico and has been engaged in the practice of law in New Mexico continuously since that date. Scott has practiced before the New Mexico Workers’ Compensation Administration since his admission to the New Mexico bar in 2006. Further, Scott is admitted to practice law before the 10th Circuit and the United States District Courts for the Districts of New Mexico.
Upon returning to New Mexico in 2006, Scott worked as an associate with the Albuquerque law firm of Butt Thornton & Baehr PC. Scott was elected a full equity partner in the law firm of Butt Thornton & Baehr PC starting January 1, 2012 where he remained until January 1, 2020 when Scott opened his own law firm, NM Workers’ Compensation Attorneys LLC. In the course of his employment with Butt Thornton & Baehr PC, Scott gained substantial experience in representing insurance carriers and their insured in workers’ compensation and personal injury cases. This experience allows Scott to better assist you in your workers’ compensation claim as he knows and understands how insurance companies operate.
Since leaving Butt Thornton & Baehr PC on January 1, 2020, Scott discontinued his defense work and focuses on representing persons injured in work-related accidents before the New Mexico Workers’ Compensation Administration.

Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
We took on a case for a person where the insurance had denied the case, and where 4 other attorneys the person consulted turned her case down. We were able to obtain back benefits, medical care, and eventually, a settlement. All of this had a big impact on the person.
How did you build a successful practice?
We pride ourselves on personal client interaction as well as returning calls or communications within 24 hours. The personal touch has made a big difference.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Responsive, honest answers. Being up front with a client about what damages they can recover in workers' compensation, and more importantly, what they cannot recover is critical in building a solid relationship.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is crucial in workers' compensation matters. There are roughly 20-25 attorneys in the entire state of New Mexico that due workers' compensation on a full-time basis. While claims are handled by an administrative agency, the laws change regularly as well as the case law since it is one of the most appealed areas of the law in New Mexico. Submersion matters, and we are proud to be a firm that focuses on workers' compensation.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
We can provide an overview of the New Mexico workers' compensation system as well as what damages are, generally, recoverable in workers' compensation.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Name, address, email, date of injury, how the injury occurred, body parts injured, name of employer, name of insurance adjuster, and doctor presently treating the injured person.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
We focus on workers' compensation, which is our firm's passion.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Obtaining benefits for persons the workers' compensation system has discarded.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Triathlon, outdoors, hiking, and my kids athletic endeavors.
Are you involved in your community?
I am a board member (and former president) of the New Mexico Wrestling Hall of Fame.
