About Michelle
In 1985, two years after her brother's graduation, Obama received a BA from Princeton. She graduated cum laude with a major in sociology and a minor in African American studies. She continued on to Harvard and graduated with a JD in 1988. During her time at Harvard, Obama worked for the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, which helped low-income tenants fix housing issues. She also joined demonstrations advocating for the hiring of minority professors.
In 1991, Obama began working for the Chicago-based law firm Sidley Austin LLP. At the firm, she specialized in intellectual property law. At that same firm, Obama met her future husband, Barack Obama. She also help public sector positions at the Chicago city government in 1991, first as an assistant to the mayor, and then as Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development. In 1993, she became the Executive Director of Public Allies, a non-profit organization in Chicago designed to foster positive youth behavior. In 1996, Obama began an active career at the University of Chicago. She started as Associate Dean of Student Services and then became the Vice President for Community and External Affairs of the University of Chicago Hospitals. Obama largely left her own career in 2008 to help Barack Obama on his presidential campaign trail. She became more active in politics in 2011 and helped her husband once again for his re-election campaign in 2012. Obama is known for inspiring women, advocating for poverty awareness and social justice, promoting nutrition, and developing physical activity programs for youth.
