Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

In the last two years I had two clients wrongly accused of rape. If convicted they both faced life in prison. In the one case, through my cross-examination, I showed that the accuser was lying. In the other case I discovered that the DNA evidence was flawed and got the accuser to admit that she was not telling the truth. Both clients were acquitted. Additionally, a few months ago I got a client acquitted of felonious assault with a rule 29 dismissal of all charges at the close of the State's case.

How did you build a successful practice?

I built my successful practice through hard work, dedication, and extreme disdain for loosing.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

They should look for a "straight shooter," a lawyer who will honestly tell them what they are up against but one who is not afraid of the challenge should that be in the client's best interest.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is very helpful. Fortunately I've discovered that when I'm not local other locals are happy to give me the rundown on the local jurisdiction.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I can tell the client what they are facing, the obstacles in their case, and how to avoid pitfalls before it is too late.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

I would need to know the facts of the case, if the person has a prior conviction, and whether there are defenses to the accusations.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

The most obvious is that I am a woman which I feel is an advantage in that it allows me to utilize a different style, one that has proven very successful. Additionally, I am respected in the legal community by prosecutors, lawyers, and judges, which only helps my client's cause. I have 20 years of experience as a trial lawyer, as well as 20 years experience as a successful appellate lawyer which keeps me apprised of the many changes in the law. I am also a law professor at Case Western College of Law.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is winning the fight for my clients. As a criminal defendant you are almost assured an uphill battle and are often the underdog. I love coming from behind and winning!

What are your other interests in addition to law?

My other interests are politics, the environment, art, physical fitness, family, and community.

Are you involved in your community?

I'm very involved in the community, volunteering for service in Appalachia every summer to repair homes, as well as serving as the co-chair of the school levy committee which we just passed this last election.
