Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
We had two jury verdicts last year - One against WalMart and one against a hotel in Camden, County Georgia. The WalMart verdict was in a pharmacy malpractice case and resutled in a $330,000 verdict. That verdict has been featured in pharmacy continuing education classes in other states to help teach pharmacists how to be more careful. The verdict agains the hotel was for $1,500,000 and invovled the rape of a woman who was a guest. While the the verdict can never take away the pain our client experienced, it did go a long way in forcing the hotel to take responsibility for its actions.
How did you build a successful practice?
By taking the time to explain the legal and litigation process to clients. The more informed a client is as to how the process works, the happier they are. We also involve the client constantly throughout the process, allowing them to be involved in every major decision. We truly understand that we work for the client, not the other way around.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Someone that truly cares and is willing to stand toe to toe with anyone - from WalMart to Johnson & Johnson.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Depends. Local knowledge can be important and helpful in dealing with local witnesses and courts. This is why we retain local counsel in all cases outside southeast Georgia.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Explain how the legal process works and explain what we can do to help them.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
A good summary of your legal issue along with a brief timeline of events. Timelines are very important because all cases must be either resolved or filed within the statute of limitations.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Taking the time with clients and keeping them updated. Plus, our willingness to try any case when a defendant doesn't fully accept responsibility. Between the four lawyers in my firm, we have tried well over 100 jury trials to verdict. I'd be willing to bet we have tried more cases than any other firm in our area.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping clients and forcing corporations and insurance companies to change their practices.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My wife, my two little girls, my dog, fishing, and hunting - in that order.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes. We are active members in the United Methodist Church on St. Simons, sit on the board for the Fellowship of Christian Ministries, and frequently volunteer with Georgia Legal Aid.
