Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

In the area of Estate Planning, because I offer a free review of existing Estate Plans, I have been able to update Wills & Trusts that were prepared before the Federal & State Estate Tax Laws were radically liberalized-over a period of years the Federal personal exemption was raised from $625,000 to over $5 Million per person, and similar increases were made in the State tax laws. Updating & revising older estate plans simplifies these plans and also results in savings for the clients that were not possible under prior laws. In the Area of Contracts, Insurance and Real Property Law, one of my clients was sued by her Landlord for breach of her lease and for damages to the leased property, with a total claim of $50,000, plus counsel fees. My client's Insurer, denied coverage and refused to defend her. I threatened the insurer with a bad faith refusal to defend suit and the Insurer caved, and agreed to retain me to defend my client. They not only paid all of my legal fees and costs for her defense, but also settled the Landlords damage claim at no cost to my client. The suit took over 10 months and involved substantial fees and expenses that my client was able to avoid because of my ability to force her insurer to defend and indemnify her. In the Business Law area, I handled the sale of my client's medical services business, for a price of $5.25 Million. I had represented the client for over 20 years as his General Counsel and had represented his company in employment discrimination, unfair trade practice, contract and other matters over the years. The buyer of his company was represented by one of the largest law firms in California, and had attorney's and paralegals from their San Diego and Washington, D.C. offices working on the acquisition, while I alone represented him. Disputes that arose later on involving my client's employment contract and a $1 Million dollar escrow were resolved in 2 separate mediation's with my client prevailing on all issues.

How did you build a successful practice?

By word of mouth from satisfied clients.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Experience, skill, candor & communication skills.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is very important-maybe critically so.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

It depends on the facts of the case as they are disclosed to me. Depending on the facts I can usually tell if I can help the client or not and what the cost will be.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Usually I can tell whether the case falls in my areas of expertise, and if so what more I need to provide the client with a ""ballpark"" estimate of cost and what needs to be done to prepare the matter

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

My broad experience in private practice as well as having been a managing attorney with a major corporation (Mobil Oil Corporation) for 25 years. In my 50+ years of practice, I not only have an excellent track record of success, but I can usually see facets of the case which a less experienced attorney will miss-such as the bad faith case and the acquisition cases described above.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Protecting my client, so that he/she gets the result they bargained for.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

My bride of 53 years, dancing, sports-I play at least 4 hours of ""competitive"" (USTA 3.5) tennis a week, My children & grandchildren, live theater and keeping up to date on what is happening in the work around me.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes. We live in Sun City Huntley, a Del Webb active senior community, and my wife and I are much involved here.
