Nick L. Nielson Argues Whistleblower Case
Nielson Law Office, Pocatello, for appellant. Nick L. Nielson argued Mark Van appeals an adverse jury verdict on his claim against Portneuf Medical Center (PMC) for an alleged violation of the Idaho Protection of Public Employees Act, Idaho Code sections 6-2101-2109 (the “Whistleblower Act”). The jury determined that Van engaged in activity protected by the Whistleblower Act but that the termination of his employment did not result from the protected activity.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I worked through the State child protection system and the Shoshone Bannock Tribal Courts to have my clients successfully adopt two Native-American children.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Potential clients should look for thoroughness in the capabilities of the lawyer. The lawyer should also be personable and understanding.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Knowledge of the local judges' styles and nuances is key in being efficient and effective as a lawyer.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most reward aspect of the job is the client knowing and understanding that I did the best job that I could for him/her.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My interests include camping, hiking, photography, gardening and gourd art. I am also very interested in researching my ancestors.
Are you involved in your community?
I am Chairman for the Historical Preservation Commision for my city. I am also a board member of the Idaho Association of Museums.
