About Olga
During my studies I was a Governing Board Member of the law school clinic which assisted underprivileged clients with certain legal matters such as Landlord Tenant, Bankruptcies and Family Law. Basically, I was approved to practice law under the supervision of an attorney 2 years before I graduated and this is where my love of helping the underprivileged came about.
Although I have been licensed to practice law since 1987, I have been in essence representing clients for the past 36 plus years.
Throughout my career, I have always owned my own law firm so that I could choose who I represented and how I wanted to do so. I never wanted to join a firm where I was a peg in a wheel having others decide what cases/clients were going to be helped.
I have volunteered numerous of my work hours as an attorney assessing cases at a significantly reduced rate, I have volunteered and acted as an interpreter in Immigration asylum cases and volunteered many hours acting as a Judge Pro Tem in Small Claims court. In addition, when the recession hit hard there were many layoffs at the court. As a result the court became severely backlogged and I volunteered alongside other attorneys to work in the clerical field to make sure the submitted documents were correctly processed. I also volunteered at the Family Law Facilitator's office for several years wherein I helped people on a Pro Bono basis with various issues that they walked in with regarding family law such as paternity, divorce, custody, support and other familial matters.
In 2006, I became a Court Appointed Attorney for the Probate Court. As in Criminal Law, the court appoints an attorney to represent you when a Conservatorship is filed, whether general or limited. Since the petitioning party is requesting that certain rights that belong to you be taken away and given to another. I continue to serve as a Court Appointed Attorney and sometimes when a matter becomes complex I also serve as a Guardian Ad Litem for those who cannot speak on their own behalf.
When my assistant's husband became blind, she learned first hand of all of the inequalities that the visually disabled have to suffer through. Unlike the sighted, a visually disabled person relies on websites and other avenues to assist in their daily lives. My assistant came to me knowing my propensity for wanting to help the disenfranchised and I was appalled at how poorly the visually disabled were being treated on various websites or facilities.
How demeaning is it when you constantly have to ask someone for help versus being able to simply help yourself. So many websites make money from offering goods and services online but have forgotten the large blind community who also shops and relies on these websites. I therefore agreed to bring these issues to the attention of the owners of poorly designed websites. These inaccessibility issues in actuality, violate both the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the California Unruh Act. Informing and placing a demand on companies to become compliant ensures all consumers, including persons with blindness, are treated equally.
There are numerous small business websites that are in compliance, so why do so many larger businesses fail to provide an accessible website?
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit and we were all under lockdown, the use of a website became of the utmost importance for many people. The web became even more important to those with disabilities and their inability to access websites that provided the basic needs that we take for granted became even more upsetting.
As a result, I chose to start to focus on contacting owners of websites that my clients inform me are in violation of the ADA and the CA Unruh Act. Upon verifying that these sites are not incompliance and not accessible to persons with blindness, my office contacts them to address these violations.
It’s mind boggling that many website owners prefer to hire an attorney to avoid having to fix their poorly created websites and to continue making money with their discriminatory website online. I ask, why not simply fix the website as the law requires? And that is why I do this. That is why I have decided to address websites that are not in compliance with the law.
At the Law Office of Olga Nazimova, we are here to assist our clients in seeking to correct these injustices.
