Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

In the past couple of years, I represented a client who had a prior criminal record and was placed in immigration detention, facing imminent deportation. At first glance, the situation appeared extremely difficult, as the government was treating the case as a straightforward removal matter with limited options for relief. After a detailed review of the case, I identified legal and procedural issues surrounding his detention and filed a habeas corpus action challenging the basis for his continued custody. Following that litigation, we were able to secure his release on bond, allowing him to reunite with his family and properly participate in his defense. More importantly, while the case was pending, I conducted a deeper analysis of conditions in his home country and uncovered significant changes that materially strengthened his eligibility for protection. Based on those developments, we repositioned his case toward asylum and related relief. Today, he is no longer detained and is actively pursuing a viable path to lawful status in the United States. What began as a near-certain deportation has become a case with real hope and a clear legal strategy moving forward. This matter reflects the importance of not accepting initial appearances in immigration cases, especially where criminal and immigration issues intersect, and of taking a strategic, multi-layered approach to both detention and relief.

How did you build a successful practice?

I built my practice by focusing on three things consistently over the years: disciplined client service, strategic case handling, and clear communication. From early on, I made a conscious decision not to treat cases as routine paperwork. Immigration law is complex and often life-changing for clients, so I approach each matter with a strategy-first mindset—understanding not just the immediate issue, but the long-term immigration consequences and opportunities. That approach has helped me handle difficult cases, including those involving prior denials, criminal history, or removal proceedings. Equally important has been my commitment to accessibility and clarity. Many clients come in confused or misinformed, and I believe part of my role is to simplify the law for them and give honest, practical guidance—even when the answers are not easy. That builds trust, and over time, trust turns into referrals and long-term relationships. Finally, I have been intentional about educating both clients and other professionals through writing, speaking, and media. Sharing knowledge not only helps people make better decisions, it also reinforces the depth and structure behind the way I practice law. In my experience, a successful practice is not built overnight—it is the result of consistently doing the right things for clients, case after case, over many years.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should look for more than just credentials when choosing a lawyer—they should look for judgment, experience, and the ability to think strategically about their case. First, competence in the specific area of law is critical. Immigration law, for example, is highly specialized and constantly evolving, so it is important to work with someone who handles these matters regularly and understands both the legal framework and how cases are actually decided in practice. Second, clients should look for a lawyer who communicates clearly and honestly. A good lawyer will not simply tell you what you want to hear—they will explain your options, the risks involved, and the realistic chances of success. That kind of transparency is essential in making informed decisions. Third, responsiveness and commitment matter. Immigration cases often involve tight timelines and high stakes, so clients need a lawyer who is attentive and prepared to act when necessary. Finally, clients should consider whether the lawyer approaches cases strategically rather than mechanically. The difference between a routine filing and a well-thought-out legal strategy can significantly impact the outcome, especially in complex or borderline cases. In my experience, the right lawyer is one who combines technical knowledge with practical judgment and a genuine commitment to protecting the client’s long-term interests.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

In immigration law, local knowledge can be helpful, but it is not the primary driver of success. Immigration is federal law, not local law, which means the legal standards, forms, and core procedures are governed at the national level. That is why I am able to represent clients across the United States and not just in one city or state. What matters most is not whether a lawyer is physically down the street, but whether the lawyer truly understands the law, sees the strategic issues in the case, and knows how to position the client for the best possible outcome. In many cases, that depth of legal judgment is far more important than simple geographic proximity. Of course, practical familiarity with different courts, officers, and procedural tendencies can still be useful, and I take those realities seriously. But in immigration practice, the real difference-maker is strong federal law knowledge combined with sound strategy, careful preparation, and the ability to navigate high-stakes situations effectively. In short, local knowledge may add value at the margins, but it is strategic command of immigration law that usually determines whether a case is won or lost.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

For immigration matters, I do not offer free consultations. Immigration law is too important and too complex to be handled properly through casual phone chats or quick generic answers. Every case turns on specific facts, prior history, documents, deadlines, and potential legal consequences, and it would not be responsible to give off-the-cuff advice without taking the time to review those issues carefully. A paid immigration consultation allows me to do what clients are actually paying for: apply legal judgment, spot risks, identify opportunities, and give strategic guidance tailored to their situation. That process is often the first important step in avoiding costly mistakes, false assumptions, or bad advice that can damage a case. For personal injury matters, the situation is different. I do provide free consultations for injury cases. In those calls, I can evaluate the basic facts of the accident or injury, discuss whether there appears to be a viable claim, explain how the process works, and outline the next steps. If the case qualifies, representation is typically handled on a contingency fee basis, which means there are usually no upfront attorney’s fees. My approach is simple: when a matter requires serious legal analysis, I treat it seriously. When a case is appropriate for a free screening, I make that available.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

What differentiates my practice is a combination of experience, strategic thinking, and a deliberate focus on results over routine processing. With over 29 years of legal experience, I approach cases with a long-view mindset. I do not simply prepare and file applications—I analyze each matter to identify risks, opportunities, and the best overall path for the client, especially in complex situations involving prior denials, criminal history, or removal proceedings. I also place a strong emphasis on clarity and honesty. Clients are often dealing with significant uncertainty, and I believe they deserve straightforward guidance about their options, including the strengths and weaknesses of their case. That level of transparency builds trust and helps clients make informed decisions. In addition, my background as a legal author and educator has shaped how I practice. I have spent years breaking down complex legal concepts into practical strategies, and that same approach carries over into how I handle client matters—structured, thorough, and focused on execution. Ultimately, I see my role not just as a lawyer, but as a strategic partner in helping clients navigate high-stakes legal situations with confidence and direction.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my work is seeing the real-life impact that a successful case has on my clients and their families. In immigration law especially, the stakes are rarely just legal—they are personal. Behind every case is someone trying to build a stable life, protect their family, or secure a future they have worked hard for. Being able to step into those situations, provide clarity where there is confusion, and help move a case from uncertainty to resolution is deeply fulfilling. Some of the most meaningful moments are not necessarily the victories themselves, but what those victories represent—reunited families, individuals released from detention, or clients finally able to move forward without fear hanging over them. After many years in practice, that sense of impact has not diminished. If anything, it has reinforced why I approach each case with seriousness and care, knowing that the outcome can genuinely change the trajectory of someone’s life

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Outside of my legal practice, I am deeply interested in technology, entrepreneurship, and education. I have spent many years building and supporting digital business platforms, as well as mentoring individuals on how to leverage technology to create opportunities and improve their economic outcomes. I also enjoy writing and content creation, particularly on topics related to law, business, and personal development. Sharing knowledge in a practical and accessible way has always been important to me, whether through books, speaking engagements, or media platforms. In addition, I have a strong interest in public discourse and social issues, especially those affecting governance, economic development, and the everyday realities of people in emerging markets. I believe professionals have a responsibility not only to succeed in their fields but also to contribute meaningfully to broader conversations that shape society. These interests complement my legal work by keeping me engaged, forward-thinking, and connected to the real-world challenges people face beyond the courtroom.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes, community involvement has always been an important part of my work, both within and outside the legal field. I regularly engage with immigrant communities through educational content, seminars, and media platforms designed to simplify complex legal issues and help people make informed decisions. Many individuals encounter immigration challenges without reliable guidance, so I see public education as an extension of my legal practice. Beyond immigration, I have also been involved in mentoring and supporting entrepreneurs, particularly in the area of digital business and technology. I believe that economic empowerment is a key part of long-term stability, especially for immigrants building a new life in the United States. In addition, I participate in broader conversations around social and governance issues, contributing perspectives aimed at encouraging accountability, opportunity, and practical solutions to real-world challenges. For me, community involvement is not a separate activity—it is part of a broader commitment to using my experience and platform to make a meaningful difference where it matters.
