Over 35 years of experience in workers’ compensation and personal injury law. Paul F. Applebaum has been representing people in Massachusetts who have had the misfortune of suffering injuries, both on and off the job. His office is located in Salem, Massachusetts where he has practiced since 1986. Before relocating to the north shore, his office was located in Boston.

His practice concentrates only in injury work. He has had the pleasure of representing thousands of people from all walks of life, and in all different situations. New clients are usually referred by prior clients, friends, and family, attorneys whose practices do not include workers’ compensation or personal injury work, and now through the internet. It is not likely that viewing a website of a business will tell the whole story, but there is some information that you may wish to know about Paul F. Applebaum before considering his office for your legal needs or any office for that matter.

Attorney Applebaum is a 1972 graduate of Suffolk University Law School, Boston, Massachusetts. His training in advocacy began in his third year of law school when he participated in the student defender program, representing indigents before the Cambridge District Court, Cambridge, Massachusetts. That experience solidified his desire to represent individuals who needed assistance with the legal process, and it became very clear to him that his legal career would not be in the business or corporate forum, or some other area of practice where the emphasis was on paperwork and transactions. His first job after graduating from law school was with the Boston Legal Assistance Project. In that capacity, he primarily represented low-income clients with housing problems. He also represented indigents in criminal matters.

He opened his private practice in Boston in 1976 and became associated with a small group of attorneys with different legal concentrations. He quickly became acutely aware that there was a need for attorneys to represent the injured, as many of his clients requested injury representation. So began his workers’ compensation / personal injury practice. Attorney Applebaum has been representing the injured ever since.

He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and belongs to the Civil Litigation Section. He is also a member of the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys (MATA) and presently works with the Workers’ Compensation Legislative Committee addressing the need for changes in the law to be more favorable to injured workers. MATA is a professional organization created specifically to assist members of the trial bar in the state and a peer support system geared towards keeping its members abreast of the changes and nuances of trial practice.

In 1977 Attorney Applebaum was appointed to a quasi-judicial position with the state agency then known as the Division of Hearings Officers and served as a fact-finder for two years. The agency name was changed and is now known as the Division of Administrative Law Appeals (DALA) and attorney’s hearing cases now hold the title of Administrative Magistrate. The cases he heard were in the area of Massachusetts Public Employee Retirement and Civil Service. The retirement cases included applications by state, city, and municipal workers for Accidental Disability Retirement Benefits (ADR) who claimed that they were injured on-the-job and were entitled to a retirement benefit for life because their injuries permanently disabled them from their employment. In that capacity, Attorney Applebaum served as the judge, hearing the evidence and writing decisions. His practice now includes representing public employees in this very specialized area of the law. Attorney Applebaum was also appointed as a Master to the Trial Court in 1979. Masters also serve as court assigned quasi-judicial fact-finders in specific cases before the courts of this Commonwealth.

Attorneys at Paul F. Applebaum have also successfully argued cases before the Massachusetts Appeals Court, and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Attorney’s fees for all civil cases that Paul F. Applebaum takes are on a contingency basis (you don’t pay unless you win). Fees in workers’ compensation claims are usually paid by the workers’ compensation insurance company that insures the employer.

Adverse possession is the legal concept that if the owner of the land isn’t using it, and someone else is giving the land a useful purpose for long enough, the law favors the useful purpose over the land being left unused.
