Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I have been in my current successful practice as a partner for over 14 years now. The successes of this practice were built on developing years of experience in litigation and trial work in my prior 16 years Associate positions at other law firms. Our success as a law firm is founded on establishing cohesive working relationships with our team of lawyers. Successes in generating business have come from producing desirable results out of hard work and perseverance and persistence in cases despite the many hurdles we face as plaintiffs' counsel in pursuing personal injury claims. An illustrative example is a case I handled to completion after 10 years of litigation including two lengthy trials, two Appeals, one appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court and ultimately a Mediation. The case involved a woman rendered quadraparetic by a collision with a police vehicle that claimed to be on am emergency call. Despite admitted evidence of our client having a level of alcohol above the legal limit, we were able to successfully obtain a $10,000,000.00 settlement.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
This also illustrates the type of lawyer potential clients should seek to represent them in personal injury matters; lawyers who work to the end to obtain the result each client is entitled to, whether it requires litigation or trial or appeals.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
I have worked in the Chicago (Cook County) area and the surrounding counties of Lake, Dupage, Will, Kankakee Rockford and McHenry for 30 years. Understanding the differences in practice, the judiciary and juries in all these areas is very important to obtaining successful results for clients. For example, the same medical malpractice case can end up with dramatically different outcomes depending on whether it is litigated in Cook County or Dupage County.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I provide on a free telephone or in person consultation, even at the client's home if preferred. Whether a simple auto accident or complex medical malpractice, I have found that the most important immediate information requested is how to handle the insurance issues, mounting medical bills and inability work. In addition, at initial interviews clients want to know what happens next, from dealing with their insurance company to going to court, and what to expect in litigation; issues addressed include the timing of procedural matters, the nature of contingent fees, when they might expect to recover and general recovery amounts.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
For an informative consultation to start I would simply need the date and location of occurrence, nature of the incident, type of injury and medical care received, medical bills and wages lost if any.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of this job, despite the hard work and challenges faced in virtually every aspect of the life of a lawsuit, is the gratification that comes with seeing clients get back on their feet, both physically and emotionally, after obtaining successful results.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Other interests outside the law include participating in parish and neighborhood volunteer activities. I also am an avid snow skier and kitesurfer.
