About Paul

Paul has a trial practice focused on personal injury cases. He has earned experience in all facets of trial from preliminary hearings through trial and appeal. He has tried cases to verdict in the state and federal courts of Texas and has argued appeals before Texas and federal courts of appeal. Paul started his legal career with the law firm of Worsham, Forsysthe, Sampels & Wooldridge, L.L.P., a venerable Dallas firm started in the 1930s that focused on representation of railroads, utilities, and industrial clients. When Worsham Forsythe merged with Hunton & Williams, L.L.P. in 2002, a 100-year old Virginia-based firm, Paul joined as a litigation partner. Over the next seven years, Hunton & Williams grew to a firm with 1000 lawyers, 150 of which practiced in Dallas. In 2009, Paul left the international firm of Hunton & Williams to start his own firm, Wickes Law, PLLC. He now has the flexibility to represent individual clients and bring his years of experience to help injured victims.

Questions & Answers

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should look for a lawyer that works from a perspective that you are working for your client's and that their best interests must always be paramount. That belief manifests itself in taking their phone calls and answering any and all of their questions. A lawyer needs to be handling the details of their case, not a case worker at a commercial injury lawyer's factory. Also, important is the lawyers credentials from and educational and experience stand point. Was the lawyer smart enough to get into a good law school? Did any one want to hire him after he graduated? How many types of cases has he handled? Does he actually try cases in court or does he only settle cases and give up if he cannot get a settlement.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Generally, I can provide a "go" or "no go" decision after a five minute call. If it is a clear case that a claim needs to made, I can provide answers of what to expect as to how the process will work, how the attorneys' fee is handled, how medical costs are addressed, and how long the client can expect his or her claim to last. If it is an area that I do not feel qualified to handle, I can most likely provide a name and a phone number of a lawyer that can help. Sometimes, the best advice to a potential client is that, while they can get a second decision, they would be best off by simply letting the matter go.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

I need to learn the basics of what happened? What? When? Where? More than anything, I need to talk to the client to get an understanding of the urgency of their issue and how I can help. The most important factor is that I receive a truthful telling of events without emotion or exaggeration.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I answer my own phone and have regular telephone calls and face-to-face meetings with my clients. I am able to explain the claims process in plain English so that an injured victim that never wanted anything to do with a lawsuit or an insurance company can be a savvy party not gobbled up by the system. I have represented both individuals injured in accidents and large corporations and insurance companies. I know how both sides think and how a claim can be properly and realistically valued.
