Attorney Louis then transitioned to civil litigation as a Senior Assistant Corporation Counsel with the New York City Office of the Corporation Counsel, where he handled civil rights matters involving false arrest, unlawful searches and seizures, malicious prosecution, fabrication of evidence, and police brutality. He litigated cases in the Southern and Eastern Federal District Courts of New York.

In addition to his litigation experience, he presided over special education disputes as a Special Education Due Process Hearing Judge with the NYC Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings (OATH), further broadening his legal perspective.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I recently represented a client facing serious criminal charges that threatened his employment and future. I carefully reviewed the evidence, identified weaknesses in the prosecution’s case, and negotiated with prosecutors to pursue the best possible outcome. By developing a focused defense strategy and guiding my client through each step of the process, I helped him avoid the most serious consequences. Every case presents unique challenges, but thorough preparation and strategic advocacy can change the outcome.

How did you build a successful practice?

I built my practice by combining courtroom experience, personal attention, and a commitment to my clients. Before founding The R.M.L. Law Firm, I served as a prosecutor in Nassau County and Brooklyn, where I handled criminal cases from the government’s perspective. I now use that experience to anticipate the prosecution’s approach and build effective defense strategies. I also built my practice by prioritizing communication and ensuring every client understands their options at every stage of the case.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should choose a lawyer who understands their case, communicates clearly, and takes the time to listen. I believe a strong attorney provides honest advice, explains the legal process, and develops a strategy based on the client’s specific goals. Experience matters, but clients also need a lawyer they trust and feel comfortable working with.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge plays a critical role in criminal defense. I use my experience in Nassau County and other local courts to understand how prosecutors approach cases, how courts handle different issues, and how to develop effective strategies. Knowing the local legal landscape helps me provide better advice and stronger representation for my clients.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

During a free consultation, I explain the charges my client faces, discuss potential defenses, answer questions about the legal process, and outline possible strategies. I help clients understand their options and explain the steps we can take to protect their rights and pursue the best possible resolution.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

During a consultation, I ask about the events leading to the arrest, the charges involved, the client’s background, and any important facts that could affect the case. I also ask about the client’s concerns and goals so I can provide advice tailored to their specific situation.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I bring a unique perspective because I have served as a prosecutor, defense attorney, and judge. I understand how prosecutors evaluate cases, how judges view legal issues, and how attorneys approach negotiations and courtroom strategy. I use that experience to anticipate challenges, identify opportunities, and build effective defense strategies tailored to each client’s situation. I also provide the personal attention and communication clients need during one of the most stressful times of their lives.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. I guide clients through the uncertainty of the criminal justice system, protect their rights, and help them make informed decisions about their future. Seeing clients move forward after resolving their cases makes this work meaningful.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Outside of the courtroom, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, staying involved in my community, and continuing my education. I believe growth never stops, whether it involves improving my legal skills, learning about changes in the law, or finding new ways to better serve my clients. I also value the time I spend away from law because it allows me to return to my practice with renewed focus and energy.

Are you involved in your community?

I believe attorneys should actively serve the communities where they practice. I contribute by helping individuals understand their legal rights, providing guidance during difficult situations, and sharing information that helps people make informed decisions.
