Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
In immigration cases, every action means a lot. One case I am particularly proud of is a young man who fled violence in his home country. He went through an asylum interview but the officer did not grant asylum at that time. Instead, we went in front of an immigration judge. I pretended to be the government attorney, asking him the hardest questions I could think of to prepare him. After he presented his story to the court, the government attorney stated that he would not oppose the asylum request. In the current climate, we sometimes struggle to win at all, let alone have the government agree to what we request. The client said afterwards that he knew he would not have had the same result had he come to court without an attorney and he felt ready for anything.
How did you build a successful practice?
My knowledge comes from a lot of hard work, experience, and asking questions. Immigration law is second in complexity only to tax law so even after over a decade, I certainly still do not know everything. I have, however, had unique experiences through my work with the government and with different cases means that I know where to start. I also have made a lot of connections that help move things forward and get the information necessary to get the job done right.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
You have to feel comfortable with them and your relationship - its not enough that they know the law (which they should, someone with only a couple of years of experience should not be working on their own, but should work with a seasoned attorney), but you should feel able to speak freely with them, have them listen, and work with you towards your desired result.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Immigration law is the same in every state, however, different courts and judges require different things, so the attorney should have at least a base knowledge of what the local practices are.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I do not provide free consultations. The initial conversation will just cover the general nature of your case to make sure that the relationship would be a good match, a full consultation is always necessary to discuss the facts of your situation.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
I do not provide free consultations. Prior to the initial consultation, potential clients should email any documents they have received from or submitted to any immigration authority.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I worked on ""the other side"" for over ten years. I know what officers and adjudicators are looking for because I was that officer/adjudicator. I know how the offices work and what common practices or suggestions used by many attorneys do not actually make a difference in determining the case. I also have government connections that I can use to get information that are not generally available to most attorneys.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping people achieve a stable status, providing them with the peace of mind that their case is being handled well so they can focus on other aspects of their life.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and teach yoga.
Are you involved in your community?
Very much so, I serve on four different boards for different nonprofit organizations and organize efforts to assist community members in need.
