About Richard

Rick is a native of Des Moines. He attended St. Theresa's School and Dowling High School before attending undergraduate and law schools. Upon passing the bar in Iowa and Nebraska in 1973, he started practice in Creston, in southwestern Iowa. He continued there until 1980 when he moved back to Des Moines. Upon moving to Des Moines, he joined Larry Scalise and John Sandre and others in the firm of Scalise, Scism Gentry, Brick & Brick. Members of that firm later formed the firm of Scalise, Scism, Sandre, Uhl & McConville.

In May of 1993, Chuck Coppola, John Sandre and he formed the present firm, and have practiced until John's death in 2006. Chuck and Rick have continued to practice with the other firm members since that time.

In 1970, he married Mary Harrington. They have five children: Katie (married to Jeff Jensen), Casey, Joe, Pat and Brendan. They also have three grandchildren: Hayden and Reagan Jensen, and Finnian McConville. Mary works for Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in computer analysis and project management.

In addition to his law practice, Rick and his family have been involved in church and youth activities and sports including coaching youth baseball for over 25 years and 15 years of experience in coaching junior high football. He was a member of the West Des Moines Little League and Holiday Park Baseball Club Boards of Directors for 10 years and the Greater Des Moines Catholic Football League Board of Directors for 15 years, serving as President two years. He is a member of the Dowling club and various sports booster groups.

He was a member of the St. Theresa's School Board of education for six years, two as President and the Dowling High School Board of Directors for 10 years, serving as secretary and Vice-President. He also enjoys sports, history, genealogy and reading.

Rick was admitted to the Iowa and Nebraska Bars in 1973, and has practiced law in Iowa since that time. He also admitted to practice before U.S. Supreme Court; U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit; U.S. District Court, Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa. His preparatory and legal educations were at Creighton University (B.A., 1970; J.D., 1973). He was a member of the Union County Bar Association from 1973-1980 (President, 1976), and is currently a member of the Polk County and Iowa State Bar Associations.
