About Robert
Mr. Bastress was born in Morgantown, West Virginia. While growing up, he worked at a potato chip factory in Pennsylvania. In high school, Rob was class president and captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams.
During his first two years at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, he was a member of the football team before calling the games on the university radio station during his senior year. Between his sophomore and junior years of college, Rob interned for then Congressman Bob Wise. Rob graduated from Wesleyan in 2001 with a major in Government.
While at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, Bastress was a managing editor of the Tulane Environmental Journal and a student attorney in the Civil Litigation Clinic, where he represented clients in fair housing and employment discrimination cases. A recent development he authored was published in the Tulane Environmental Law Journal, and he received a CALI Excellence for the Future Award for the highest grade in Immigration Law. While at Tulane, he also volunteered at the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center.
Since graduating from Tulane University Law School, cum laude, in 2004, Mr. Bastress has resided in Charleston. He served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Consumer Protection/Antitrust Division of the West Virginia Attorney General's Office from 2004 to 2006. Many of his cases in the Attorney General's Office involved representing senior citizens who were victims of consumer scams. During the two years he was employed there, he was a frequent guest on the local cable access television show, Legal Journal, and often gave talks throughout West Virginia on consumer-related issues.
He left the Attorney General's Office to complete a two-year clerkship from 2006 to 2008 with the Honorable John T. Copenhaver, Jr., United States District Judge for the Southern District of West Virginia.
Following the completion of his clerkship in 2008, Mr. Bastress joined the firm. Rob is admitted to the bar in West Virginia, the Southern District of West Virginia, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. He is currently a member of Rotary, Generation Charleston, Inn of Court, the Kanawha County Bar Association, the West Virginia Employment Lawyers' Association and the West Virginia Association for Justice.
