Big Valley Law, Martin & Hahn, PLLC

About Robert

ROBERT S. HAHN founded his legal practice in 2003 when he returned to the Shenandoah Valley, serving the needs of clients in criminal, family law, civil litigation, employment law defense, general business, and personal injury matters. After graduation from the University of Tennessee School of Law and his admission to the Tennessee bar in 1997, he embarked upon a legal career that began in employment defense with the noted firm of Wimberly Lawson Seale Wright & Daves, PLLC. This experience provided him with legal expertise to help clients navigate the complex regulatory and statutory environment of internal audits, investigations, and employment litigation. In 2007, he founded the partnership of Big Valley Law (formerly known as Miner, Martin & Hahn) to allow him to better serve existing clients while offering a broader range of client services within Criminal Defense, Family Law, Civil Litigation, Employment Law, General Business, and Personal Injury. As the firm has continued to grow, the new offices of Big Valley Law opened to represent the diverse strengths of the legal team and the communities it now represents. A member of the Tennessee and Virginia Bars, he received his J.D. in 1997 from the University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville, Tennessee. He completed his MBA at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and his B.A. at Bridgewater College.

We only offer free consults to our criminal clients, all other areas of law we practice require a $250 consulting fee.

Commonwealth v. Wright

Outcome: Pending appeal in the Supreme Court Description: Client charged with rape of a child and the jury found defendant guilty of a lesser included offense of aggravated sexual battery. The case is on appeal in the Virginia Supreme Court because of Miranda issues and the fact that sexual battery should not have been a lesser included offense.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

We have had a number of cases where we have made a significant difference. We were able to avoid a mandatory minimum jail sentence with an alternative sentence and we have been able to get a number of charges dismissed based upon legal arguments and/or negotiations with the prosecutors.

How did you build a successful practice?

We operate from the principal that whatever matter we are handling for a client is the most important thing going on in their lives. We return phone calls and emails - communication is the key to providing outstanding legal services. We have continued to grow because we are a full service law firm that is committed to ensuring that our clients get the best representation possible. We offer a service - not a product. That means customer service comes first.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

There should be a bond between the client and the lawyer/staff. You have to be comfortable from the outset that the attorney or firm you hire is the right fit for your needs. In choosing an attorney you have to rely on your gut instinct to hire an attorney who is able to answer your questions in a straightforward manner who does not talk in circles and/or sound like a politician.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

The practice of law is very personality driven. Having a relationship with the court and opposing counsel is very important. The attorney should be able to give you a historical summary of how they have handled similar cases in the court for which you are seeking legal representation - be it criminal, family law or civil litigation.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

The attorney will talk them through the consultation. The attorney will start out by getting the caller's story. Properly asked questions will prompt better answers which in turn will allow the attorney to ask more in depth questions. It is the attorneys job to obtain the information they need during the initial consultation.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

It will depend on the type of case. Again it is up to the attorney to figure out what information they need. Every case, while similar to matters the lawyer has handled in the past, is unique to each perspective client and the attorney will formulate questions that will tailor their strategy as to how to handle each client's individual case.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I have grown this Firm from a solo practice to a full service Firm because of our belief that each matter we handle is the most important thing going on in our client's lives - whether it is a misdemeanor charge, a custody case or complex litigation. Every client knows that we will treat their case with the importance it deserves and we will respond to client questions immediately.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

People come to us when facing very significant challenges in their lives. We try to shepherd our clients through difficult times and ensure that they get the best representation possible.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

We live in one of the most beautiful areas in the world here in the Shenandoah Valley. Any out of door activities - especially hiking the trails in the Skyline drive - allow me to recharge on the weekends so I can face the challenges of the coming week.

Are you involved in your community?

I have coached my kid's youth league sports for years. I have two (2) rules for the kids. Have fun and do your best. The young people I have met through youth coaching gives me optimism that America is in good hands in the future.
