Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I helped a client who claimed to have an abusive spouse avoid an unjust criminal conviction by defending her in court against her spouse's claims of assault. I also helped out a client whose relative has allegedly taken property that she was supposed to receive under a will. There had been a previous lawsuit in which my client had lost on the issue prior to the testator's death. We filed suit after the testator's death and were able to reach a favorable settlement for my client, given the procedural difficulties in the case.

How did you build a successful practice?

My practice has been successful due to God's blessing first and foremost! I have made my fees affordable and have been very available to answer questions. As a solo practitioner, I make sure my clients know that they are not just another client for a big firm, but instead they are a person and a priority to me.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should first look for a lawyer who will shoot straight with the client about the strengths and weaknesses of their cases, as well as what the costs to the client will be in terms of attorneys' fees and other matters. Along similar lines, clients should also make sure that their attorney knows when to aggressively litigate a case and also when to reduce the risk of loss and settle a claim. Finally, clients should look for an attorney who treats the client with respect.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is more important in family law cases than in almost any other matters. Certain courts have certain tendencies, and the more well-acquainted with those local nuances an attorney is, the better that attorney can counsel his clients.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

In a free phone consultation, I can provide (1) a preliminary evaluation of a client's case, (2) the client's next steps based on that evaluation, (3) my fee, and (4) a list of any questions that I need answered or any information I need from the client to start working on the case.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

In a free phone consultation, I need (1) the facts of the case, (2) the people involved, (3) any damage caused, (4) the client's goals of any litigation (the desired outcome, and (5) any witnesses that I may need to contact.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

What differentiates me from other lawyers in my community is that I work with my clients to pay me and I tell them what the law and the facts mean for their case, regardless of whether it is favorable or not. I also prioritize my clients, as a solo practitioner, and give them personal treatment that they could not receive from a large firm.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I help a client avoid injustice.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I enjoy church, playing the guitar, golf, Braves baseball, Falcons and Patriots football, and NC State sports!

Are you involved in your community?

I play the guitar at my church.
