Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I represented a young boy and his mother with respect to the collapse of a balcony on to the young boy. The litigation was pursued against the owner of the complex and a contractor who did work on the complex. We employed excellent experts in the case both against the owner of the complex and the construction company. The clients were very satisfied with the work we performed and the conclusion of the matter. In another matter, we represented a person who was severely injured in an automobile accident by a drunk driver. We were able to successfully pursue the matter to a conclusion for the client who was severely injured.
How did you build a successful practice?
Our practice was built based upon providing excellent personalized service to each of our clients. Each case has two attorneys assigned to the case and a paralegal. Therefore, the client always has someone with whom they can communicate about their legal matter. Also, we care deeply about our clients and the impact their injuries has had on their lives. We are not just lawyers, but we first and foremost are empathetic persons who are always thinking about how the accident or event has affected the lives of our client.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should initially consider the experience of the attorney. Have they practiced for a lengthy period of time in the area of law for which the client is seeking representation. Also, clients should feel a natural connection with the attorney who will be representing them since they will be working with the attorney often for a lengthy period of time.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
I think local knowledge can be helpful, but is not always essential. It very much depends on the case being pursued. In the event the accident or event was substantial and occurred in a small town or county, it sometimes is helpful having an attorney from outside the area represent the client. An attorney from outside the smaller town may approach the case with more substantial resources and knowledge of trial techniques and strategies that are effective is catastrophic injury matters. In the event the case is tried to a jury, we will often bring in a local attorney at that point who has knowledge of individuals who may be in the jury pool.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
We need a basic description of how the accident or event occurred and the injuries the person suffered. We also like to know if the person has suffered prior injuries unrelated to the accident or event. For car accidents, we also like to know the level of damage to the cars. This is important because insurance companies and juries often consider the level of property damage to determine if the accident could have caused the injuries claimed.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
We have substantial experience handling catastrophic injury cases. Our firm is unique. We are larger than most personal injury firms that often only have 1-2 attorneys. However, we are not a gigantic advertising firm from which you do not always get as much individualized attention from the attorneys.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Simply put, helping our clients put their lives back together after a terrible event or accident. They are often struggling emotionally with the aftermath of what occurred and we work hard to lift the burden of dealing with the claim off their shoulders.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I like to read, travel and spend time with my family.
Are you involved in your community?
I am very involved in the non-profit area. My family started a non-profit that helps families who are homeless and moving into their first apartment. The non-profit furnishes the new apartment for the families.
