Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I practice Consumer Bankruptcy exclusively. My most rewarding case in the last year involved a "mentally challenged" divorced woman with 4 kids, whose home was 8 days away from foreclosure. Her only source of income was court ordered child support which was being paid on a regular basis. We needed to stop the foreclosure so the home could be sold at fair market value. Because of the limited time, she was unable to obtain a lawyer. I took the case, filed a chapter 13 bankruptcy, got the case confirmed, which stopped the foreclosure long enough to get a bona-fide buyer for the house.
How did you build a successful practice?
I built a successful practice by years of hard work, adherence to a strict code of ethics, and never being afraid to tell a potential client my true opinion even if it meant turning away a fee. I also learned to market myself in a manner that others didn't. For example, I advertised in smaller yellow page books where I was one of a few lawyers not one of many.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Client should look for a lawyer who is not afraid of saying he doesn't know, if he doesn't. And who always puts the client's best interest ahead of his own.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge of the success of my cases is moderately important.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
At the initial free phone consultation, I can usually tell if there is a good chance I can help the client. I'm willing to meet with them even if it is borderline. In bankruptcy matters it is the balance between income, expenses and the client's objectives that are important.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I have 38 years' experience in private practice. I win more than half of my Chapter 13 cases, where the national average is less than 10%. I do this by spending more time educating the client before during and after the case is filed.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my practice is saving my client's from financial disaster and putting them on a great track for future success.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Out of the office my interests are in music and model aviation.
