Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

In a workers' compensation case, I recently settled a death claim for 400,000.00. That is impressive in itself, but the real interesting part of the case is that 3 or 4 different lawyers before did not recognize the law for this type of case. The client came to me at the 11th hour and I was able to timely file the claim, which resulted in the widow and her son collecting a significant amount of money when other attorneys advised her she had no claim.
In other workers' comp cases, I was able to collect generous settlements when the worker was injured in this state, but the employer was based out of another state.
In some personal injury cases, I was able to convince an insurance company that it had issued the policy incorrectly and, as a result, the limits were increased and stacked. I settled with the insurance company for the driver quickly, but the key was to get the client's insurance company to increase its limits and add stacking, otherwise the client would have been forced to accept $30,000 but for my efforts she collected $200,000. I have had many situations where I have collected from the client's own under-insured coverage first and then collected from the negligent person's insurance after. I have also settled or arbitrated several uninsured claims as well.
In family law - divorce, I recently helped a wife who was ordered to pay her husband $90,000 for medical bills after her previous attorney did not do a good job for her at the equitable distribution hearing on the assets/debts. After taking over the case and appealing, the judge ruled wife was entitled to $200,000 and only $25,000 of the medical bills upon proof of matching payment from the husband. It has been more than two years and husband has not paid any of the bills, so my client has not had to match anything so far.
In another divorce case, the wife came to me after 5 or 6 attorneys could not recover anything for her. After she had given up on all hope she came to me and I eventually recovered $40,000 from the husband. In another case wife had manipulated husband to sign all assets over to her. Eventually the judge ruled that my client was entitled to half of the estate. The wife had squandered all cash so she had to sell has to pay my client or go to jail. House sold.
Custody - I recently was successful in getting a father his son from NY. The mother had custody by agreement of parties, but then she took child to the Dominican Republic for an extended stay, of which father did not approve. I was able to help father in securing jurisdiction in PA and parties agreed that child was to stay with the Dad.
In another case, I was able to have children relocate to California with their father after mother ran into tough times, and the wrong people, here in PA and there was even a question at first as to whether he was the father of the second child. Genetic testing proved he was and the three of them live happily ever after in CA. There are many more successful stories like this.
Criminal - I was able, through appeals, to get a federal constitutional right on search and seizure applied to PA. So I had the Commonwealth of PA adopt new law that was not recognized before.
I also successfully defended a client on self defense grounds who was attacked by a man who had an amputated limb. My client was found not guilty by a jury.

How did you build a successful practice?

I built a successful practice based on long hours of hard work, constantly thinking about my clients' cases well after office hours, achieving positive results and caring about each one of my clients.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

A client should look for a lawyer who tells it like it is and not based on what the client wants to hear. The attorney should be straight forward and honest at all times during the representation. At times there is going to be bad news that has to be relayed to the client and not sugar coated.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge in my neck of the woods is very important because PA is a Commonwealth which means that each County has its own set of rules as opposed to uniform and consistent State rules. So I have to be familiar not only with my County's rules but also those in the surrounding Counties in which I practice.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I do not offer free phone consultations unless it is for a workers compensation claim or a personal injury case. In those matters I just need to know the names of the parties involved, where it happened, when it happened and the extent of the injury or injuries.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

What differentiates me is that I care about my clients and the client always gets one on one personal attention from me at all times important to the case.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my practice is when I get a positive result for the client when he or she thought all hope was lost.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

My other interests are my family, first and foremost , sports , playing golf , driving stock car style race cars really fast and taking my wife out for a romantic dinner.
