Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

The case that was the most significant to me involved a client' who had two children and a reasonably prosperous husband who simply refused to support the children or his wife. He deliberately hid his income. Notwithstanding his efforts, we were able, with the help of a forensic accountant to reconstruct his income and convince the court that he had a great ability to pay. Interestingly enough, this lifestyle analysis technique is the same process used by the federal government to imprison the notorious gangster, Al Capone, for income tax evasion.

How did you build a successful practice?

My practice has been built primarily by former clients referring me friends and family. Additionally, other lawyers have always entrusted their own family members and friends to me as well. I think the primary reasons both groups do this is because I am always responsive to my clients, keep them fully informed and am always mindful of how expensive lawyers are.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

The best way to find a lawyer is by a recommendation followed with a review of that lawyers credentials. NOT bragging but actually an examination of what that lawyer has done and how he has been evaluated by his peers.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge can sometimes be critical to success. Everyone (including judges) has quirks - knowledge of them is very helpful.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Generally, during a free telephone consultation I can fairly rapidly provide a potential client with the broad steps that need to be taken and the issues (and sometimes possible solutions to those issues) with which we will deal. I can also provide estimates of costs. Generally, by the end of the conversation the client has the opportunity to evaluate our "legal compatibility" without taking the time to come in to the office at that early stage.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

When a client calls for a free telephone consultation it is helpful for that client to have some basic income and debt information as well as thoughts regarding parenting time, living arrangements and the like.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I think the primary difference between me and most other divorce lawyers is my trial experience. I have been trying cases of many different types for over 40 years. It is comforting to a client to know that if their case must be tried, an experienced trial lawyer will be representing him or her. One other differentiating factor is my ability to temper my natural aggression with an understanding that unrestrained aggression leads to very high legal bills. Controlled aggression always serves a client best. I think it is one of my talents.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

In Family law you usually begin to represent a client when they are at their worst - fearful, angry, depressed, etc. Within a matter of 6 months or so, you can eliminate all of those concerns and have the client on the way to a new life - happier, healthy and stable. For me, this is the most rewarding aspect.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

In addition to the law and my family, I am a baseball fanatic and nearly a political junkie. I was deeply involved in elected office and still follow both local and National politics.

Are you involved in your community?

My community involvement has been quite extensive. I coached baseball for almost ten years and ran the entire baseball program for two years. I have also functioned as an unpaid legal advisor to my church. I also served as a councilman and mayor in my town. My law firm "adopts" a family every year for Christmas providing food and gifts.
