Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

BP Oil Spill multi-district litigation (U.S.Dist. Ct., EDLa); Transvaginal Mesh multi-district litigation U.S.Dist. Ct., SDWV).

How did you build a successful practice?

Personal referrals; networking with other lawyers, especially great trial lawyers; legal seminars and legal conventions; effective, ethical marketing.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Honesty in billing and contractual fairness; willingness to listen and communicate frankly with the client about about the extent of your knowledge and expertise in their area of interest; preparation, preparation, preparation; willingness to learn the technical subject matter, especially the medicine in medical cases; willingness to co-counsel with lawyers who know more than you do about an area of law or the scientific and technical aspects of that area; ability to discern a feasible case; a lawyer who will never try to misrepresent or conceal the facts or the law from a judge or jury.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Essential, if you mean obtaining a historical perspective of the predispositions of judges and juries.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

My history and background and the statutory and decisional law relating to the client's area of inquiry if I know it.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

The whole truth with no embellishments.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I am not a politician or a member of any legal clique. I don't care about my popularity among members of the Bar or the Judiciary as long as I diligently represent my clients within the bounds of legal and moral ethics.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

When I change a life for the better. This is the most rewarding aspect of my life, not just my job.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Environmental concerns and preservation of the natural world. Enjoying and respecting nature and the other creatures in it without a feeling of entitlement or superiority. Making true friends with good people. Showing my friends and family how much I love and appreciate them. Not allowing big people to step on little people. Confronting bad cops and phony politicians. Identifying good causes and supporting them. Identifying bad causes and bad ideas and opposing them regardless of their popularity. History, including religious history, and especially looking beyond revisionist history to appreciate the lessons we can take from an understanding of untainted history that does not have an agenda. Learning when to speak and when to keep my mouth shut. Practicing humility and admitting when I am wrong.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes, mostly causes that help young people in trouble, the homeless, the working poor, our military veterans, our active-duty military personnel, the environment, and helping good cops and good judges keep young people out of jail. My aspirations exceed my performance. I get caught up in the everyday aspects of life and making a living, and I don't contribute nearly as much as I could.
