Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Family law and Divorce Attorney Santo Artusa has successfully represented thousands of people who have cases in New Jersey. In one case: There was a case where my client's husband abandoned my client and she could not locate him. He was a very successful businessman and he just picked up and left, leaving her in the marital home, without any access to money. After an extensive search, we were able to locate him in Georgia, served him with divorce papers and motion papers. We were able to have his assets frozen, have our client receive alimony and a lump sum for expenses. We were very proud that we found him and were able to get our client what she deserved.

How did you build a successful practice?

Being successful in any business is about caring about your clients. If you care about them, they will care for you and your business will grow. Most of my clients become repeat customers in different practice areas because they were happy with the initial service they hired me for.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Clients should look for an attorney that actually practices in the area of law that they need help with. The law has become more complex over the years and working with a "generalist" can be a dangerous proposition. It is better to work with someone that has 2-3 areas of practice so that the attorney is on the front lines and understands what is going on in the courts.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is important to know how local people live and how life is in the area where you are seeking a court order. A case in one county can be much different in another county and the attorney needs to know this. That is one reason I suggest to people that hiring a local attorney for your case is very important.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

A prefer in person consultations but when I do phone consultations I try to find out what the client's goal in the case is and see if I believe my team and I can help the client achieve that goal. I do not take cases from people with unrealistic expectations.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

I need to know where the case is, has a case been filed, if not, how soon the client wants to file. If they have any court orders they can email me prior to the consultation, that is very helpful.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I would say that I do not accept every case that walks in the door and that if I take your case, that means that I believe in it and will do everything in my power to achieve my client's goal.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is the client interaction and at the end of the case knowing that I did my best and the clients appreciate it.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Family is the most important aspect of my life, my wife and two children. I am also a big sports fan. I love the Islanders, Giants and Mets, while I also root for the New York Jets.

Are you involved in your community?

I have coached my son's soccer team, I volunteered for the American Red Cross and other community activities.
