About Seth

Seth Jacoby was admitted to the State of Connecticut Bar in 1994 and has since been admitted to practice before all the courts in the State of Connecticut, in the United States District Court for Connecticut and the U.S. Southern and Northern Districts of New York, as well as the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals, all in which Seth has appeared throughout his practice. In addition to his regular practice in the trial courts of Connecticut, Seth has represented clients numerous times before the Connecticut Appellate and Connecticut Supreme Court.

Seth received his B.A. from Dartmouth College in 1990, where he was a four-year member of the Dartmouth Football Team, and his J.D. (law degree) with honors, from Pace University School of Law in 1994, where he was the Articles Editor of the Pace International Law Review. Among the distinctions he received in law school was the American Jurisprudence Award in Contracts Law. After graduation from law school, Seth fulfilled a one-year legal research clerkship for the Hartford Superior Court where he worked directly with the trial court judges drafting written decisions on trials and motions before the court.

Seth spent one year after his clerkship working under one of Hartford's more esteemed trial lawyers, F. Timothy McNamara, where he concentrated on white collar criminal defense in federal court as well as personal injury litigation. From there, Seth returned home to Glastonbury, where his family has resided since 1976, to practice law in a local firm as an associate attorney. With Purtill, Purtill & Pfeffer, later Purtill, Purtill, Pfeffer & Jacoby, Seth handled a variety of matters consistent with a general practice firm including civil litigation, wills and estate planning, probate administration, small business creation, family law, and commercial and residential real estate. It was there, however, where Seth began to focus in the areas of commercial litigation, creditor's and debtor's representation, and bankruptcy.

In January 2008, Seth started the Law Office of Seth Jacoby, LLC, to better offer a full range of legal services tailored to the needs of individuals, families and businesses in and around the community. More particularly, his practice focuses on residential and commercial real estate, wills and estate planning, probate administration, personal injury, commercial and civil litigation, bankruptcy and foreclosure protection, as well as general business and corporate matters.

Seth's litigation work is primarily in the areas of Debtor's and Creditor's Rights and Bankruptcy, Commercial Litigation, Personal Injury and Appellate Practice. Seth has worked extensively on commercial and civil litigation matters at the trial level, including handling prejudgment remedy matters, mechanic's liens and foreclosure cases. Seth has successfully argued multiple cases in the Appellate Court and has appeared a number of times before the Connecticut Supreme Court. He has worked on a variety of Bankruptcy adversarial matters, including numerous contested matters and adversary proceedings for both individual and institutional clients. He has handled various Bankruptcy Trustee actions, including preference claims, as well as defending such actions, including fraudulent conveyance actions and preference litigation.

His transactional practice includes Commercial and Residential Real Estate matters, where he routinely represents sellers, buyers, lenders and builders assisting them in purchases and sales transactions, refinances, work-outs and restructurings, as well as drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, leases and escrow agreements.

Seth also has extensive experience handling wills, estate matters, powers of attorney and advance directives/health care instructions, as well as handling probate administration and guardian and conservatorship matters in the probate courts.

He is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association and the Hartford County Bar Association. He is a co-President of the Dartmouth Club of Hartford and was Dartmouth College's Alumni Council Representative for the Greater Hartford area for four years, having served as the Chairperson of the Dartmouth College Young Alumni Committee. He was a long time Board Member of the Glastonbury ABC House, where he served on the executive committee as Treasurer for seven years. He is a past Board Member of the Glastonbury Family YMCA and he currently serves on the Board of the Glastonbury Lacrosse Club, as well as the Glastonbury Education Foundation.

Seth is a co-founder and the President of the Friends of Glastonbury Sports, Inc., a not-for-profit entity formed to assist the town and school board in working to enhance the recreational and athletic facilities in the Town of Glastonbury, in particular the installation of the new turf field and track complex at the high school. He currently serves on the Parks and Recreation Commission for the Town of Glastonbury. He is also actively involved in youth sports as a coach in the Glastonbury Basketball Association, Glastonbury Lacrosse Club and Glastonbury Youth Football Association. Seth is also an assistant football coach at Glastonbury High School.

Seth, who grew up and attended secondary school in Glastonbury, resides in Glastonbury with his wife, Mairead O'Connor Jacoby, also a lifelong resident, and their two children.
