About Sheryl

Sheryl Serreze, Esq. is the former United States Trustee for the District of Rhode Island and recently completed a Fellowship at the WilmerHale Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School. Previously an adjunct professor of law a Roger Williams University School of Law, Sheryl focuses her practice on insolvency matters, bankruptcy appellate and consumer rights litigation. Admitted to the Rhode Island, Massachusetts and California Bars, she graduated from Boston College Law School in 1984, cum laude.

CASES OF INTEREST:

Melfi v. WMC Mortgage Corp., 568 F.3d 309 (1st Cir. 2009) : TILA class action case where mortgage company left spaces on model form blank for date of refinancing and date of actual deadline for rescission. District Court held that these technical deficiencies did not violate TILA and First Circuit affirmed. Petition for Rehearing en banc and/or Panel Rehearing filed 6/25/09. If denied, Plaintiff intends to seek a petition for certiorari to the United States Supreme Court.

Brocco Development Corporation, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of RI case no. 09-11432: Represent single asset real estate holding company in chapter 11.

NE Environmental Services, Inc., U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of RI case no. 07-10476: Represent former principal of environmental company in chapter 11, later converted to chapter 7.

Chang v. Social Security Administration (In re Chang), U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts Adversary Proceeding No. 07-01413: Successful adversary complaint against the SSA for post-bankruptcy collection of overpayments.

Bennett v. RCN Telecom Services of Massachusetts, Inc. et al (In re Bennett), U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts Adversary Proceeding No. 08-01059: Settled complaint against utility company for continuing to try to collect from debtor after bankruptcy filing.

In re Blue Grotto, Inc., 243 B.R. 602 (Bankr.D.R.I. 2000): Converted chapter 11 fee issues.

In re American Chemical Works Co., 235 B.R. 216 (Bankr.D.R.I. 2000): Chapter 11 violation of stay litigation.

In re American Shipyard Corp., 220 B.R. 734 (Bankr.D.R.I. 1998): Chapter 11 litigation regarding breach of contract in towing ships.

In re Almacs, Inc., 181 B.R. 143, (Bankr.D.R.I. 1995): Fee application disputes regarding largest chapter 11 in Rhode Island history.
