Recent awards and settlements include $2,300,000 for a construction worker who fell into an excavation, $600,000 for a pedestrian struck by a car and $200,000 for a Nursing Home patient who was injured while under the care of the nursing home.
Barton Slavin obtained a $1,800,000 jury verdict in the first of the stray voltage cases brought against Consolidated Edison when there were a flood of cases in approximately 1998. Read a reproduction of the front page of the NY Law Journal article here.
Mr. Slavin is proud that he is a Brooklyn Technical High School graduate. He is a University of Buffalo cum laude graduate and obtained his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. He was admitted to the Bar in 1983, is licensed in all New York State Courts, Federal District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
He is or has been a member of the New York State Bar Association, New York State Trial Lawyers Association, The Association of the Bar of the City of New York, New York County Lawyers Association, and the Defense Research Institute. He has won awards for his Pro-Bono activities from The Brooklyn Bar Association – Volunteer Lawyers Project, Inc. He has served as a Panelist for the NYSBA Trial Academy, which consists of classes that train attorney on how to be a trial lawyer.
Since his admission to the Bar, Mr. Slavin has handled many complex injury claims have involved bicycle accidents, wrongful death, motor vehicle accidents, construction accidents, paraplegia, significant limb and spinal injuries and industrial accidents. He has argued Labor Law 240(1) and other negligence cases in the Appellate Divisions of the New York Courts.
He served as President of The Brooklyn Bar Association (June 2006 to June 2007), having served as a Trustee and Executive Board Member for many years. He has been the Chair of the Membership Committee, and Co-Chair of the Outreach to Orthodox Attorneys Committee. He currently is a member of the Judiciary Committee, the Supreme Court Committee and several other Committees. He has also served on several Committees of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and a Board Member of The Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, Inc. He has served as a Member of the Grievance Disciplinary Committee of the 2nd, 11th and 12th Judicial Districts, Second Department, State of New York (years 2006 to 2014). He has been a Speaker lecturing newly admitted Attorneys (years 2006, 2008, 2010) at the request of Hon. A. Gail Prudenti, then the Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department, State of New York. He has served as a Delegate from the Second District to The House of Delegates of The New York State Bar Association and is an Alternate to the Nominating Committee of the The New York State Bar Association. He has been a Speaker at Continuing Legal Education seminars of both the Brooklyn Bar Association and The City Bar. He has published legal theory articles in the Brooklyn Barrister and serves as Chair of the Subcommittee for Marketing and Event Promotions of the Committee for Bar Leaders of New York State, New York State Bar Association, 2016 -2017.
Justices of the Supreme Court have appointed him to serve as a Court Evaluator in Mental Hygiene Law proceedings. He has also received appointments to serve as a Guardian Ad Litem for infants and incompetents in Estate and Guardianship proceedings as well as serving as a Referee in Foreclosure Sales proceedings.
His non-legal activities include his involvement as an Assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts and a Supporter of the Girl Scouts. He enjoys camping and long distance bicycling. He provides free legal advice to the cycling community of New York having been a supporter of Transportation Alternatives for over twenty years. He is a Life Member of The League of American Wheelmen. His wife Amy was an original founder of the 5 Boro Bike Tour.
